Valentine announce the marriage of their daughter, Dessie Jewell, to Rex Stroud, of Oakwoods, on Tues day. December 25, 1934, at Hills- vllle, Va. The ceremony was per formed by Rev. Clinton A. Brad- ston, of the Hillsville Methodist church. This marriage comes as complete surprise to the many friends of the young couple in North Wilkesboro and the sur- roundin.g communities, where they are both well known. Mrs. Stroud is the attractive and accomplished young daugh ter of the "'ell known Sgt. and Mrs. I. E. Valentine, of this city. She is a member of the 1934 graduating class of the North Wilkesboro high school and also a graduate of the Hinshaw School of Beauty Culture. She has. for the past several months, held a position with the Vanity Wilkesboro Woman's Club Hold Meeting Friday Education Week was observed at the monthly meeting of the Wilkesboro Woman’s club held Friday afternoon with Henry Reynolds, of Greensboro and North Wllke.sboro, as .the princi pal speaker. Mr. Reynolds spoke on Education and the large num ber of club women present heard him with marked interest. Short talks were made by several of the members of the club. Mrs. Pearl Hartley was program chair man for the afternoon. The meeting ■was held at the home of Mrs. T. M. Foster with Mrs. W. W. Barber and Miss Hel en Bostic as associate hostesses and at the close ot the afternoon they served dainty refreshments during the social hour. Mrs. C. H. Bumgarner combined hospi tality to the members of the Wil kesboro Baptist Missionary So ciety in their monthly meeting held at the horn© of -Mrs. Mitchell Thursday afternoon. The theme for program “The Christian Con quest in China’’ was directed by Mrs. Bob Turner with a number ot the members taking part. Mrs. J. F. Jord;:n led an impressive devotional period. Presiding for routine business was the president, Mrs. \V. J. Johnson and Mrs, George Ken nedy gave a fine report of the social service work being done by th© society. Plans were made for the “Week of Prayer" to bo ob served at the church December 5. Practically all the members were present and during th© so cial hour a salad course with cake and coffee was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy Hosts At Dinner Party The personnel of the South East Public Service Co. here and at W'est Jefferson wore delight fully entertained Thursday eve ning when Mr. and Mrs. George Kennedy were hosts to the group at a turkey dinner at their home in Wilkesboro. Mr. Kennedy is local manager for the company. A three course dinner was served at seven o’clock with cov ers laid for sixteen. A color note of pink and white was effective ly carried out in the decorations and appointments. The general manager. Mr. L. D. Densmore, ot Charlottesville. Va., was also present. Miss Wellborn, Mr, Pearson Given Announcement Party Miss Manic Brewer, Miss Lun- (la Hendren and Miss Rosa Bil lings entertained at a delightful party Friday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the Brown House an nouncing the engagement and ap proaching marriage of Miss Joyce Wellborn and Harry Pearson. During the evening the guests were presented with ribbons in pastel shades and were told that there was a surprise at the end of the streamer. A small white envelop was found which con tained the announcement giving the date of wedding as of De cember 29, 1935. Miss WoUborn and Mr. Pearson found at the end of their streamer a card of congratulations and a gift pre sented by the hostesses. Following the announcement each guest was asked to write advice to the bride and groom, this being presented to them. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses at close of the evening.
