The Chief ExecuUve’s. -.yaaeur- ances to Harrison followed a let ter written to Barkley addressing him as “Dear Alben,’’ and urging passage of a court reorganisation bill at this session. Many legisla tors had expressed the belieif that this letter meant the President wanted Barkley to fill Robinson’s shoes. - The President had heard,” Harrison said as he left the White House, "that some had interpret ed the letter to mean that he was thereby injecting himself in to the leadership contest. He wanted to give me the ab solute assurance that nedther he nor the administration in any way was taking sides; that that was a matter entirely for the Democratic membership to de cide.” With the Senate in a virtual turmoil over the court bill and the leadership contest, both ac centuated by the Preeldent’s let ter to Barkley, great interest at tached to Harrison’s call at the Whitfe House, together with that of two other senators. Senator Byrnes (D), South Carolina, after withdrawing from the leadership race in favor, it was understood, of Harrison, re sponded to a White House sum mons, as has Senator Hatch (D), New Mexico, prominent in the battle over the court bill. Byrnes, however, left the ex ecutive mansion saying he dis cussed a census of the unemploy ed, and Hatch said he took up “a personal matter in New Mexi co.’’ Postmaster-General Farley, who was in about the same time, .said he discussed civil service leg islation. Harrison said he and Barkley had conferred during the day and had come an agreement that it was desirable to get the leader ship question settled as early as possible and that, therefore, a caucus would be held next Wed nesday morning at which the vote will be taken.
