J. B. (Bid) Williams, secre-
tarj-treasurer of the North Wil-
kes1>oro Insurance Agency, holds
the same position with the North
Wllkesboro Building and Loan
Association and is one of north
western North Carolina’s best and
most favorably known citizens.
He was born In Iredell county,
reared on a farm, came to North
Wllkeeboro in 1902 when this
town was still in its infancy. Soon
he was working for the astound-
ngly big sum of 20 cents per day
in a brick yard.
He attended school here and
Always active in the civic af
fairs of this community, Mr. Wil
liams has held many positions in
civic organisations. He was the
first secretary of the Klwanls
dab here and is a memiber of
that organisation now. He was
president of the western district
of the Building and Loan League
for one year has served as
Keesler Memorial chairman for
the B. & L. League in the state
for several years. For many years
he was treasurer of the Wilkes
chapter of the Red Cross and aid
ed in every campaign for funds
for that humanitarian organisa
tion just as he has aided all local
moyements to promote the wel
fare of humanity. He is also presi
dent of the Northwestern Fair
association.
Mr. Williams nas an outstand
ing personality, alyays courteous
and genial but decidedly frank.
He has an ever growing circle of
friends and acquaintances.

gave a surprise birthday dinner
at their home north of the city
Sunday to honor Mr. Church’s
father, Mr. J. W. Church on his
76th birthday. Those of his chil
dren present and family were
Stanford Church, of Greensboro.
Mrs. J. H. Joines, Mrs. Mae Todd
McGinnis, of this city. Dinner was
served to about 25 in picnic
style.
Some idea of the amount of
equipment of the firm can be
gained by a look at the nine am
bulances and funeral cars. Four
are at North Wllkesboro, two at
Boone, one at West Jefferson and
two at Sparta. All are available
at any one place in case of emer
gencies.
The firm places service fore-
mort In every instance and their
reputation for complete and sym
pathetic service is widely known.
In 1932 W. K. Sturdivant, pres
ident and general manager of the
funeral home, promoted the or
ganization of Relns-Sturdivant
Burial association, but not until
state laws which he and some
others had asked were passed
placing burial associations! under
insurance regulations, assuring
every member who paid dues that
funds would be on hand to pay
the prescribed benefits in case of
death.
TTie membership of the associ
ation in 1932 was 860. Now it to
tals '46,000 and is still growing.

vant, is president of the burial

In addition to his business in
terests W. K. Sturdivant has be
come one of North Wllkeaboro's
best known civic leaders and has
alwajrs backed every movement
for progress of North Wilkesboro.
He is active in the Baptist church,
is a past president of the North
Wllkesboro Kiwanis club, presi
dent of the Wilkes County Merch
ants association before it merged
with North Wilkesboro’s Com
merce Bureaus last year. He is
also actively affiliated with a
number of well known fraternal
organizations. Including Masons,
Juniors. KnighU of Pythias and
Dokies lodges.
In 1936 he was president of
the North Carolina Burial Asso
ciations and Is now a member of
the legislative committee of that
state^wlde organization.
He Is one of North Wilkes
boro’s most useful citizens.
The firm of Reins-Sturdlvant Is

The monthly meeting of the
Ronda Home Demonstration club
met on Tuesday, June 11th, with
sixteen members present, at the
school house.
The meeting was called to or
der by the president, Mrs. Dob
bins. The club collect was repeat
ed in unison.
Mrs. J. H. Burchette gave a
splendid talk and study on the
picture. “The Spinnee”, by Maes.
In this picture all were asked to
observe two objects, the sweet old
lady at her dally task, bent and
worn from the years, and the old
spinning wheel that was bent and
worn from days of use.
The roll was called, and each
member asked to answer what
part of the district meeting was
enjoyed most. The minutes were
read t>y the secretary, Mrs. Rich
ard MarUn.
