Naval Training Stations has now
made It possible, for all Nort^

to be transferred to aetlve doty

■by Lteateaant C. B. Neely, oSlcer-
In-charge of’^Navy recmltlng In
the state. f
“Recruite will no.longer have
to wait at home on Inactive duty
until they can be transferred to
a naval training station,” the of-
flcer said. "Due to the huge In
crease of enlistments after Pearh
Harbor, the training ^stations
were not able to accommodate the
flood of men and recruits had to
be put on"Inactive duty. This pe
riod has ended now and men vol
unteering are transferred imme
diately.’’
The seven Tar Heel Navy re
cruiting sta.ions have been call
ed upon to furnish 300 men per
week, one of the largest quotas
assigned any state. "This Is an
other testimony to the r^pid or
der of naval enlistments' lu this
patriotic state,” Neely declared.
“North Carolina enlistments
were hgh during the period of
the national emergency, leaped
to unprecedented heights after
Pearl Harbor and have held stea
dy during these far months be
cause Tar Heels realize that the
Navy Is our first line of OF
FENSE.”
The oflicer-in-charge pointed
out that there is a place in naval
serv.ee for every ma.i within the
age limits who can meet physical
•tandards. Enlistments are being
accepted in the regular Navy for
men between 17 and 31—in the
naval reserve from 17 to 50.
It is possible for skilled work
ers to enlist in the naval reserve
with petty officer ratings with
pay ranging from $60 to $99 per
month, plus $34.50 quarters al-
lowanci’ for married men qualify
ing as second class officers or bet

lowing trades may now secure
petty officer ratings; aerogmph-
ordnancemen, ma
chinists, laetaismiths. motor me
chanics, painters, radio operators
and technicians, seamen, ship fit
ters and cooks. Experienced hos
pital technicians, first aid men
end pharmacists are also .'ceded
for service with the hospital
corps.
Men wittiout e.stablished trades
who enlist ill either the regular
Navy or the naval reserve are el
igible to be os.signeii to any one
of the 75 Navy trade schools.
‘ Healthy, alert North Carolln-
iun.s should take advantage of
the multitude of opportunities
offered by our Navy,” Neely as
serted. ‘‘They may now join their
friends and neighbors for service
with the fleet in America's great-
e.st tight for freedom.”

Ceiling Put On
Price Of Items
■Washington. — The government
carried its campaign against rising
living costs into the kitchen, cup-
bard and closet yesterday by plac
ing price ceilings on china and
pottery and a long list of cotton
products including sheets, blankets,
diapers, towels and ginghams.
In addition, a permanent price
lid was put on used egg crates, an
element in the cost of eggs.
The two major orders affecting
prices at the manufacturers’ level
and, in the case of cotton, should
bring about "considerably lower”
prices than those prevailing, OPA
said. The chinaware order, cover
ing hundreds of china and pottery
items, including cups, saucers,
dishes, plates and bowls, was in
effect a denial of a price boost re
quested in February.

This is contrary to a widespread

trator Leon Henderson said.
It is effective May 4, and bases
prices on the levels prevailing July
21 to August 16, 1941. The ceili ig
is a flexible one, designed to let
prices fluctuate with raw cotton
quotations.
Additional finished articles af
fected include bedspreads,- table
cloths, napkins, corduroys, flan
nels„ coftonades and chambrays,
and among the unfinished goods
cohered arc shirting, sateens, gab
ardine, industrial fabrics, ducks,
and wide goods of 42 inches and
over.
Price schedules on a ‘‘dollar and
cents” basis are being prepared for
the new items brought under ceU-
ings. Henderson disclosed, but for
the time being it was considered
best to provide a method under
which each seller would determine
his maximum price for himself,
even though this might result in a
different ceiling price for each pro
ducer.
Price Formula
For this reason an elaborate
formula was .set out under which
the sellers will use the "weighted
average price” in effect during the
July 21-August 15 basis period, ad
justed by the differentials pro
vided for changes in spot, cotton
prices.
The china and pottery order im
poses on manufacturers of viterous
ware a ceiling at the price levels
of October 1-15, 1941, but allows
producers of semivitreous ware to
charge 5 per cent above the Oc-
taber 1-15 quotations.
OPA said this would allow a
‘‘fair margin of profit.” Manufac
