While the .committees were preparing the state delegation list and the re^lutlons. Chairman Casey called on several Republi cans for talks. Former Solicitor John R. Jones started the ball to rolling with a rousing speech In which he paid his' “respeeta” in no uncertain tbrms to Prank Woodhouse, the Yadkin county Democratic representative who “disfranchised every voter in Wilkes county when he Introduc ed and supported a bill in the il939 session of the Geheral As sembly to divide Wilkes county into districts”. Mr. Jones said ‘‘that this was taxation without representation,’’ and he called on the good, honest Democrats of the county to join with the Re publicans in a fight to get this “abominable” bill repealed. Mr. Jones also made a strong attack against the Democratic leader ship of the county for allowing so much politics in the school system of the county. Others addressing the conven tion were R. Don Laws, N. B. Smithey, Presley E. Brown, and J. B. Norris. Olin Watson was another speaker, and he said that “his friend John R. Jones should apologize to Hitler for calling Frank Woodhouse "Hitler”. The convention re-elected N. B Smithey chairman, and R. Don Laws, secretary, of (he county executive committee for the next two years. Following is the list of dele gates to the Republican State Convention held in Greensboro to day: N, B. Smithey, It. That we recognize that 0':r teachers have acquired their prep- araton at great coat to themselves and their families through . long years of study and that the pe quirements of the prrfession never cease both as to cost of cemtinued preparation and of effort to meet new requirements in the profes sion and hence therefore, we favor such increase of salary as will en able them to stand on a parity with other public servants of th«j time. 3A6 Recognizing the necessity for skilled labor* we would heartily endorse the establishment in all our high schools a course of me chanical training. 4 . We favor Old Age Relief, but strictly condemn the reported ef fort on the part of certain Demo cratic leaders in Wilkes county to require the aged and infirm to vote the Democratic ticket in order that they may continue to receive their relief. 6. We condemn the Democratic leaders ir. Wilkes and Yadkin counties who caused the Legisla ture in its 1939 session to pass an act districting (Wilkes and Yadkin counties and gerrymandering the districts in such a way as was in tended to enable tha Democratic party to elect a majority of the county commissioners in said counties, thereby defeating the wishes of^ the people in electing those officials who assess and lay and in the taxes of the county truth are the governing bodies of the counties and in so doing they have made it possible for a small minority group to govern a whole body-politic without its citizens having any semblance of oppor tunity to vote for or against such officials. We therefore call upon all good citizJens of AVilkes County, regardless of past party affilia tions, to join with us in our effort to obtain the immediate repeal of this wrongful and iniquitous act which disfranchise,: every freeman of our good ebur’y. 6. TTiat we further condemn the practice of the local Democra tic leaders who in recent years have caused the Legislature to pass certain other acts, which acts have been introduced and sponsor ed by Democratic henchmen of other sections of the State and which acts prevent the citizens of Wilkes county from electing pub lic officials to perform certain functions of the cour cy on the same basis as other counties of the .state do; and in other matters allow the Sheriff to assume au thority of the commissioners which has from the foundation of our government been a.seribed to them. 7. That we favor every econo my possible be cxerci.sed in our government, local, state and nati onal. We condemn waste, e.xlra vagenee and inefficiency which have been so prevalant in every department of our government in recent years, and condemn the continued expending of fabulous millions of tax payers money, a great portion of which is borrow ed, on frivilous, non essential, non defensive4)i'ojects instituted in the early days of the depression. 8. AA'e condemn the unfair elec tion practices carried on in North Carolina and the election laws passed with the purpose in mind of dealing unfairly with the minor ity party to the end that more and more in this fair state does the ballot become a m(;re fiction. 9. We favor the stale-wide ref erendum in the matter of dealing with the legalized manufacture and sale- of intoxicating liquors in North Carolina. 10. We commend Governor Broughton in his untiring effort to secure an equal distribution of gasoline for the state of North Carolina. We do not claim for^ our selves any special privileges, but we insist that all sections of our country should be treated with equal fairness. 11. That we hereby pledge our untiring' efforts and all our sup port to the prosecution of the war in which we are now engaged. 12. We commend the Republican officials of Wilkes i;ounty for their diligence and zeal in attend ing to the business of their respec tive offices. 13. That we express our sincere regrets to J. Edgar Pardue, excel lent citizen, enthusiastic Republi can and good man, and the Repub lican nominee for County Commis sioner from the District No.’ 2, who coupigf,- ’•Vs..- ■i . RESTRICTibN . Another beneficial move was seen In the announcement that the deadline tor filing applica tions to replenish reserve sup plies had been advanced to June 15. Formerly It was May 15, last Friday. Officials pointed out that tires secured as reserves would not be charged against the coun ty’s quotas, and urged all govern ments, concerns and agencies which are eligible to file applica tion as soon as possible. Concerning the “abuse” of tires, which would make the ab user ineligible for further tires, officials said that standards had bet- set up to guide the boards 'n deciding when a tire is recap- pable and when it has been ab used or neglected.
