Christmas
It will be almost the same Merry Am
erican Christmas enjoyed so often in
the past. The house will be filled
with the scent of good things cooking and the soimd of chil
dren’s voices . . . and though there will be perhaps an empty
place at the dinner table it will be with pride, not sadness, that
we think of those far from home. Make this Yuletide a time for
prayer as well as joy. And midst neighbors and friends and the
homespun sincere greetings of those you know will be found
renewed faith in the true spirit of Chrirtmas ... and the belief
that “peace on earth . . . good will toward men” shall once more
live in the hearts of all men everywhere. To the countless wish
es that come your way we should like to add ours to wish you a
truly. Merry Christmas, and Victorious New Year.

C. 6. Poindexter
Sheriff of Wilkes County
Winston-Salem.—Tou’ve got tol
know the thugs yon are dealing
with or they will gyp you plenty,
according to'Johnny Doixblns, 25-
year-old Yadkin county man,- who
Friday night confessed to Sheriff
A. Li. Inscore of Yadkin county;
that he had a ^nd In the gun-
ond-antomoblle robbery of Mrs.
Bessie Myers at Cycle several
weeks ago when aimrozlmately
,500 was taken.
Dobbins, who admitted he serv
ed as rn outpost while the rob
bery was being committed, said
“the other man’’ In the ease gave
him only $150 as his “half" of
the loot.
“If he really got $1,500 he
short changed me plenty," Dob
bins said ruefully. He said fur
ther that in his rambling here. In
Greensboro end at Washington,
D. C., he had blown all of his
swag.
As he signed for tals valuables
at the office of the desk sergeant j
at police department, before Sher-1
Iff Inscore left with him for Yad-
klnvllle, he erplained about all |
the crlmlnrl exploit had netted
him—a new ovkrcoat and hat and
a brand new billfold.
' Sheriff Inscore hrough his prls-
I oner here shortly after noon Frl-
I day for complete fingerprinting
land “mugging." He had arrived
from Washington, D. C., only late
Thursdpy night.
Sheriff Inscore declined to Indi
cate who was the “other man” in
the case, if he knew. Neither did
Dobbins discuss his name. Sher
iff Inscore stated definitely that
he was not yet under arrest.
Sheriff Inscore left Winston-
Salem between 2 and S oclock
Friday afternoon before he had
obtained his confession from Dob
bins. Apparently Dobbins was
under the impression the sheriff
was going to leave him here in
definitely for safekeeping, possi
bly until he softened up and
talked.
Just before the sheriff pulled
out, Dobbins Indicated he wanted
to come to an understanding.
“If you’ll take me back to the
Yadkin Jail, I’ll tell you some
thing,” the sheriff quoted him os
saying.
The sheriff told him he would
take him back to Yadklnville If
he would “talk here."
"I’m going out of town, but If
I possibly can I’ll come back for
you tonight,’ he told the prisoner.
Upon his return Dobbins told the
whole story. Dobbins said he ex
pected to get a stiff sentence, the
sheriff said. ..... ...
According to Dobbins’ story
and the story Sheriff Inscore
picked up from Mrs. Myers and
others, the crime was about as
follows:
■Mrs. Myers returned from
church well along In the evening
and put up her automobile.
Douglas Johnson, who resides in
the neighborhood, dropped In at
about the time she arrived at her
store, filling station .-md aparl-
mcnt combined. A customer
dropped in and bought some gro
ceries and departed.
Then the man with the gun ap
peared witli the lower half of his
face masked. He made .speedy
woi'k of requiring Mrs. Myers
to Open the cash register and sofe.
He took all of the money from
erch and then denuanded his vic
tim’s automobile key, still keep
ing Johnson and the woman cov
ered with his gun.
He then got In the car. promis
ed to leave It unharmed “just
over the hill" and roared away.
It was “just over the hill" that
Dobbins joined him and they split
the haul, according to Dobbins.
Dobbins has been in the Yad
kin county courts for reckles.s
driving and public drunkenness.
'Te was arrested here on a liquor
charge a little over a year ago
and did four months. He has a
brother. Camellus Dobbins, alias
■'Will,” alias “Bad Eye’’, alias
"Wiley,” who lives at Greensboro
who has spent a great deal of
time in the pen and on the roads.
His offenses have ranged upward
to highway robbery.
The youthful prisoner was most
agreeable as he prepared to re
turn with the Yadkin officers to
Yadklnville. Sheriff Inscore said
he did hot regard It necessary to
handcuff hla prisoner.
