A 'Fir»t Aid Detachment
haa been chartered for the
Wilkea chapter of the
American Red Crow.
The detechment Is composed of
18 local people ■who completed
the advance first, aid course and
12 of that number graduated
from the first aid instructors
course. *H. F. Bouknlght, as
Red Cross first aid chairman,
heads the detachment, which has
received its charter from the Eas
tern area office of the Red Cross.
Duties of the detachment will
bo to serve for relief and treat
ment of injured in case of any
emergency.

Vonley Triplett, age 39, a
resident of the Deep Gap
conununity of Watauga
county, died last night at the
Wilkes hospital from gun
shots inflicted in Boone Sat
urday night by Police Chief
A. L. Gross, of Boone.
Triplett was hit twice by revol
ver shots, in the left abdomen
and right side. He was given
emergency treatment at Boone
and brought to the hospital here.
Little hope was ever held for his
recovery.
According to reports reaching
here, Triplett, two of his sons and
two other men were engaged In a
brawl when the police chief ap-
'proached. Triplett is said to have
started fighting the officer and
had drawn a knife when' Chief
Gross fired the shots. Two of
Triplett’s sons were arrested for
resisting on officer. The two
other men were also arrested.
Triplett is survived by his wife,
Mrs. SalHe Triplett, and five sons:
Gurnle, Raymond, Herbert, Arlie,
and Daniel Triplett.
Funeral service will be held
Friday, two p. m., at Laurel
Springs church in Watauge.

Missing
Pfc. W. Thornton Staley has
been missing since February 14 in
the North African theatre of war
operations.
Message that Pfc. Staley was
listed as “missing in action” was
received this week from the war
departirient by his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. B. P. Staley, well known
residents of the Reddies River
community.

Shew died at the "Wilkes hospi
tal here a short time after the ac
cident. He was riding In a o.ir
driven by Pritchard Shew and
with other occupants when the car
'struck a bank on the roadside and
overturned. None of the others

Shew was a resident of the
community where the accident oc
curred. He i.s survived by his
, wife, Mrs. Mae Shew, and his

tannery here and is now field
supervisor for Standard Oil com

fice. However, several weeks of
time remain before the closing
date for candidates for the elec
tion. which will be held In May.
Mr. Frazier announced his
candidacy for mayor two years
ago .hut withdrew before the date
and Mayor R. T. McNiel had no
opposition In the election.
