was commissioned a second Heu-
tenent and on April 14, 1942, was
promoted to first Iieuten,'*nt. He
gained military experience with
the National Guard company here
before it was mobilized.
The third ranking commission

pany here is 2nd Lt. John V. Wal
lace, who was commissioned on
July 15, 1942.
North Wllkesboro and Wilkes
county government units helped
make the company here possible
by furnishing funds to buy sup
plies and equipment, each having
donated twice, and the state fur
nished c specified sum.
The first mobilization of the
State Guard company here for
service was in April, 1942, when
the company was assigned to for
est fire duty in the vicinity of
Buffalo Cove in Caldwell county.
The men served without fear of
danger end completed their mis-

served as military aide to Gover
