"When you’ve got a flag like that in your win
dow, mister, you kmw why you write out your
check...when your own commimity’s war
fund and the National War Fund make their joint
appeal for your help.
"I guess I’ve done my share dixring my life to
help out folks who just weren’t as lucky as I was.
Call it 'charity’ or anything else you want. I just
call it having a heart under your vest. But...I’m
wandering...
"I also want some of my dollars to help give
my boys what the USO calls a 'home away from
home! A swell show to entertain them—in Africa,
Australia, or here in a camp at home. A cup of hot
cofifee, a cigarette, a dance with a decent, pretty
girl...all the things, big and little, that keep up
my boys’ morale. And the USO is one of the
Agencies in the National War Fund.
'What I want to say is that I didn’t have to
hink beyond that service flag to dig down deep
nd dig down qmck.
"Because I want to send food and medicine and
lothes and anything else that’s needed to the
Lussians, Yugoslavs, Chinese, and every other
0^ of our fighting allies.
'Why.’ Not just because I’ve got a heart under
ly vest. But because I want to keep them jigbtmgl
-’re my allies. The harder and longer
fight the sooner this war will be over—the
my sons will come back to their modier
"Yes, and I want things taken care of here at
home, too. The wives and children and mothers
of men in service. Kids whose mothers are work
ing in factories—and helping to win the produc
tion battle. All the local folks who need help—
w?jr or peace.
'And last, but far from least, it’s swell to be
able to give once, and know that all the different
beneficiaries of your dollars will be helped in die
best and quickest way. I figured what I’d give to
our own community’s fund and to each of the
agencies on the National War Fimd list, added
the total, and doubled it!
