Pvt. Roby 0. Shumate, age 24,
son of I. L. Shumate, of Reddles
River, was killed in action In
Italy on February 8.
News that Pvt. Shumate was
killed was contained In an official
War Department message to his
sister. Miss Goldie V. Shumate, of
Reddles River.
Pvt. Shumate entered the army
April 14, 1942. Prior to that
time he was employed at P. E.
Brown’s lum'ber plant In this city.
Surviving are his father and the
following brothers and sisters:
Ethel, Goldie, Claude and Bertha
Shumate, all of Reddles River,

Son Victim of Accident
On River Saturday
Emmett O. Johnson and his son,
Pete, were drowned Saturday
afternoon Id a river near their
home at Varnsvllle, S. C., when
the boat In which Mr. Johnson and
family were riding struck a bridge
abutment and capsized.
Mr. Johnson and famUy were
for seven years residents of North
Wllkesboro. They moved here
from Varnsvllle several years ago
and returned there to make their
home October 1 last year.
