COLONEL JOHN D. HINES
troops for the conquest of Elba.
He is the son of Mni. James A.
Hines of 211 Orange street, Wil
mington, N. C. His wife and
daughter, Elizabeth, reside at
305 Third Street, North Wilkes
boro. His wife is the' former Miss
Fern Bernard, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. L. T. Barnard, of Cricket.
Colonel Hines entered the army as
a private in a National Guard In
fantry unit in 1930, completed
his course at the U. S. Army Pre
paratory School at Fort Monroe,
Va., In 1932, and graduated from
the U. S. Military Academy at
West Point two years later.
The Peninsular Base .Section,
first American supply base estab
lished on the European mainland,
landed at the Salerno beaches hot
on the heels of the retreating
Nazis. The vast power, water
supply^ and sewer systems of the
city were shattered with scientific
thoroughness by the back-peddl
ing Germans, and a plague of epi
demic diseases threatened to
sweep like wild fire among the
million and a half inhabitants,
presenting a grave peril to the
large numbers of base section
personnel garrisoned in the area.
In record time, under the direc
tion of Peninsular Base section
engineers, the crippled city was
converted into a habitable metro
polis capable of adequately hous
ing the immense supply base of
thie Fifth Army.
The Naples port was slated to
handle the vast volume of sup
plies for the Allied front lines,
but when the ' Peninsular Base
Section took over the port it was
a cemetery of sunken ships, with
the hulls of more than two hun
dred craft clogging every possible
berthing space. All harbor facili
ties were destroyed, every piece
of machinery was mangled, quay
wails were blasted, and communi
cation and transportation net
works were neutralized by Allied
bombing a(id Nazi demolition.
The conversion of the devastat
ed port into the greatest military
supply base in the world was an
epic of engineering achievement.
Colonel Hines has been award
ed battle stars for the Libyan
Desert campaign, the Tunisian
campaign, and the campaign in
Italy.
