S. S. Princeton: December 2'2, 1944. “Dear Mrs. Bentley: “It Is with great sorrow that I. as Commanding Officer of the U. S. S. Princeton, write you con cerning your husband, John Steele Bentley, machinist’s mate first class. U. S. Navy, who, fol- m. lowing the sinking of the Prince ton on October 24, 1944, was re ported as missing In action. I regret to say that a careful review I of the known facts has led to the sad conclusion that he was killed in action. “Your husbai}d was last seen on his battle station, performing his duty, as always, in an excellent manner. Those parts of the ship through which he might have made his way Into the sea were searched, and an extensive search of the surrounding sea area was made by a number ’of ships and small boats. As no sign of him was found, it can only be conclud ed that he was killed Instantly and painlessly In the explosion which caused the loss of the ship. “Your husband was a fine man and shipmate, and a good sailor. He was admired by his fellow sailors for his good fellowship and courage, and he waa regarded by the ship’s officers as a man who conld always be relied upon in the performance of his duty. “To ns of the Princeton, his loss has been a heartfelt sorrow. I know with what grief this news comes to you. I wish greatly that I migBl hold out some hope you that your husband Is still alive, but the circumstances make that Impossible.
