UAle Moterlal: GeaMla 46 to 50
This lesson brings to a close
our study of the book of Genesis.
As we look back over the preced
ing lessons, we are Impressed
with the gracious manner in
which the providence of God
overruled the perfidies of man.
Through the faithfulness of his
servant Joseph, God was able to
convert misfortune Into one of
the most glorious achievements
e^r witnessed to the life of a be
liever. Joseph ibeoame, therefore,
a sort of symbol of uprightness,
an example of the forgiving spir
it, a type of humility seldom en
countered.
Visions of the Xlgfat.
The word of Joseph’s welfare
was the greatest news that had
come to Joseph through all the
years of his life. It was so won
derful In fact that at the begin,
nlng he had difficulty in believ
ing the announcement. But when
the full picture was presented,
he understood and believed.

_ Upon being convinced that Jo
seph was In Bgypt, the ancient
father is said to have remarked,
"It is enough: Joseph my son is
yet alive: I will go and see him
before I die." BMdently the fath
er needed little persuasion to be
gin the Journey to Egypt.
True to his character, Israel,
on beginning his Journey, came to
Beersheba for the purpose of of
fering sacrifices unto God. Fol
lowing this, we are told, that Ja
cob was sp^en unto by God “in
the visions of the night,” saying,
•T am God, the God of thy father:
fear not to go down into Egypt;
for I will there make of thee a
great nation; I will go down with
thee Into Egypt; and I will also
surely bring thee up again; and
Joeeph shall put his hand upon
thine eyes.” (Gen. 46).
It is said the darkest hour of
night is the time that immediate
ly precedes the dawn. Practically
this was true In the life of Jacob.
His soul had been downcast and
he had been in the blackest
depths of the valley when there
burst In upon him the glad news
of Joseph’s welfare and of the
provision that had been made for
the economic security of the en
tire family.
Those of us who today walk in
the valleys of the shadow of frus
tration and sorrow need to spend
more time In fellowship with our
God. We need to manifest a
greater faith In God’s ability to
dispel the shadows and to turn
our night of sorrow into the joy-

ons morning of hojw •aAVbaofc-:
God’s arm has not bean ahort-
ened with the passing of the cen
turies. Neither has it grown
weaker. He still has the power to
minister unto us in our Infirmi
ties and to keep our hearts In
perfect peace. If we will look to
him by faith. So gracious is our
Heavenly Father In hlB desire to
minister unto our every need that
he anxiously awaits our turning
to' him by faith.
Worthy Ocenpationa.
Even as Joseph had previously
Instructed his brethren before
they appeared before Pharoah,
they were asked this pointed
question: “What is your occupa-
tlc(n?” An* they answered,
“Thy servants are shepherds,
both we, and also our fathers.”
Here Is a scene that is hard
for one to contemplate without
thinking on the Importance of
worthy occupations. So many
people In life surely drift along
on the sea of human experience
without giving themselves over
to any specific task. Today they
will be doing one thing, tomorrow
another. As a result they hardly
have the opportunity to excell in
anything. As fathers and moth
ers and as preachers and teach
ers I wish we would do more to
emphasize the dignity of labor,
the virtue that lies In honest toil.
Here was a father who, with his
entire family, could say, “we are
shepherds.’’ Ther fathers had
taught them a worthy occupation.
They had laid the foundation for
self respect.
A certain Inner satisfaction is
to be enjoyed by one who can say
this is my trade: this is the work
of my hands; this is my task.
Joseph’s brethren were able to
say Just that. Their life had been
simple, t obe sure, and they had
known none of the elegant and
ornate trappings of the oriental
courts, but they knew something
better—they knew God. They had
learned the art of earning their
dally bread by honest toll.
Perhaps one of the greatest In
justices the modern parent does
the child is in permitting the
child to grow to manhood, or at
least far Into youth, without
learning how to work and to ap
preciate the dignity of It. In
many homes today the children
have next to. no responsibility
until they reach teen age. Be
cause of our modern way of
dwelling, especially in the apart
ment houses of city life, there is
naturally little for the children
to do. Still, if the reeponsl'bllltles
of the home were properly dis
tributed they could yet share la
the program of work.
Because of the lack of this
home training many young peo
ple go out Into life, and espe
cially girls, almost wholly unpre
pared for the responsibilities of
home building, and many boys
do not think of their vocation
until they are in college and, in
some Instances, until after they
have finished their college train
ing. Whatever one’s task is to be
in life, ho ought to find it rea
sonably early and then, when the
period of training is over, begin
to do it with all his might.
The Land of Goshen.
The reception of Jacob and his
sons on the part of Pharoah was
cordial indeed. They were permit
ted to settle in the land or Go
shen which was on the border
nearest to the land of Canaan.
It was a fertile and spacious sec
tion of the country and offered
the Hebrews an exceptional op
portunity for growth and devel
opment.
Unto Joseph Pharoah said,
•The land of Egypt is before

thee; in the .best of the land
make thy father and brethren to
dwell; in the land of Goshen let
them dwell.”
On the meeting of Jacob with
Pharoah, P. B. Meyer has this
to say: “Jacob must have had
something about him that ren
dered him superior to the great
est monarch of his time. There
were two kings in that royal
chamber—the one royal with the
distinction of birth and rank;
the other a wayworn pilgrim,
royal with the divine pattern of a
noble character. As they stood to
gether, it was shown to all the
world that the spiritual is great
er than the material; and that
God can endow a human spirit
with such moral splendor as to
compel the world’s conquerors to
confess themselves conquered
before this power.’’
After blessing Pharoah (Gen.
47; 10), Jacob went out of his
presence.
God’s Providential Care.
Following Jacob’s death, Jo
seph’s brethren were greatly die
turbed in the fear that he might
seek to retaliate because of the
great evil which they had done
to him in the long ago. They
said to one another, "Joseph will
peradventure hate us, and will
certainly requite us all the evil
which we did unto him.’’ They
“fell down before his face” offer
ing themselves to become his
servants if only he would give
them assurance that he had for
given their trespasses.
The words of Joeeph to his
brethren reflect the full tenor of
his life: “Fear not: for am I In
the place of God? But as for
you, ye thought evil against me;
but God meant it unto good, to
bring to pass, as it Is this day, to
save much people alive. Now
therefore fear ye not: I will nour
ish you, and your little ones. And
he comforted them and spoke
kindly to them.”
To Joseph all that had trans
pired was hound up In the pur
poses of God. He believed that
It was God’s providence working
out In behalf of them all. What
ever inconvenience, discomfort,
and sorrow he had suffered was
as nothing compared with the
blessings tbat had come through
divine favor.
If we today who are forced to
dwell in the midst of disappoint
ments, dleilusionments, and
doubts for a season would only
turn to God In simple, childlike
faith, as did Joseph—we, too.
would find an answer to it all
that would bring us and others
abiding Joy.
