North Carolina, a« Sacend-clasa natter ;i .Ic! \cl of March 4. 1879. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1946 Clothing Collection People of North W'ilke.sboro and Wil- kesboro will have an opportunity Sunday, February 17, to aid the suffering people who lo.st everything in the path of war. There are countless thousands of peo ple in the word today w'ho do not have suf ficient clothing of any kind to protect them from the weather. In the United States there are countless thousands of garments which have been discarded, by men, women and children, and which will serve no useful purpose and which will be thrown aw'ay if not given in the clothing collection campaign. In the Wilkesboros the collection cam paign will be carried out under sponsor ship of the North Wilkesboro Lions Club with the aid of the Boy Scouts. All the people have to do to participate is to gather up discarded clothing this week, tie it in bundles or place it in card board boxes, which should be put on the front porches by 2:30 Sunday afternoon. That is very little to do to accomplish much and make it possible that some shivering victim of war can be comfortably clothed. The clothes to be given should be clean and usable. Otherwi.se there are no I’e- strictions on what can be accepted. Dis carded shoes can be used, and shoes in pairs should be tied together, but not by the shoe laces. In order that all the people in Wilkes county may participate, boxes have been placed at the fire stations in North Wil kesboro and Wilkesboro and people bring ing discarded clothing may deposit it there. It is not practical to canva.ss the en tire county, but it requires very little ef fort for tho.se in rural areas to bring their clothing bundles into town on their next trip. It co.sts nothing to give in this cam paign, but your gifts can do much to alle viate human suffering. — 0 SUPPORT THE Y. M. C. A. THE EVERYDAY COUNSELOR By Rev. Herbert Spaugh, D. D. The self-centered life is miserable and unhappy. More people are suffering from ill health, unhappiness and confusion as the result of self-centered living than any other cause. The way to overcome it is to make our lives God-centered. So many letters come to this desk from those af flicted with this form of selfishness. It shows itself in many ways; an inferi ority complex, self-consciousness, bluster, bombast, nagging, bulling, self-pity, wor ry. Many take refuge from all this in al cohol which is depressing to the nervous system. This offers only temporary relief, as it depresses a man’s consciousness of his trouble only as long as he is under the influence of alcohol. Many selfish people do not realize it, will not admit that they are selfish. But anyone who is guilty of these above men tioned forms of selfishness, Ls thinking about himself and his problems, not about God and His power. Jesus Christ spoke of one of these when he told of the man who had been an in valid for 38 years, while waiting for some one to put him in the waters of healing. No doubt he had been enjoying a kind of self-pity for years. Jesus made short work of him. He asked him if he really wanted to be healed; healed him; sent him home. So many' people seem to feel that they must be lifted out of self from without; that they must find a job, go to work in somebody’s office, .store, factory. While this is helpful, it is not absolutely neces sary. Christ said that the Kingdom of God is within us. This is the place to start first. We hear much about morale, without realizing what it is. Morale is a spiritual thing. Christ said that he who would find his life must lose it. He meant that he must lose self, if he would live happily and helpfully. When He set forth a summary of all God’s commandments as, love God and love your neighbor. He left no place for self. There is nothing in the Bible about putting self in the center. In fact, it teach es the opposite. When we open our hearts to God, then our hearts receive His pow er. But that power helps us but little, if it Ls not permitted to pass through us to oth ers. It is like electricity. It does not work unless the circuit is complete. We com plete the spiritual circuit when we receive God’s power, let it pass through us into the lives of those about us, our neighbors. * Here is the secret of happy, successful, joyous living. It is one of the best pre scriptions for good health. It is so simple that many won’t take it. If you are tangled up with self, why don't you give God a chance with your life? When he comes into a man’s life, self must move out of the center. The desire to be useful to others follows. The result: true happiness. Why not try it? ABNORMAL ABSURDITIES By DWIGHT NICHOLS et al ANOTHER GOOD YARN— Mr. P. A. Jennings, of Oak- woods, who delighted all 12 of our readers with his recent yarn about bear hunting, comes back to this column with the follow ing "foreign dispatch": SCIBNnST GETS MESSAGE PROM OTHER WORIiD (Foreign Dispatch.) Henrlch.—A very sick man was advised by his physician to make his will. But he refused to will his body for scientific re search as he had been requested. After he was burled the two doc tors decided to do a little re searching anyway. That night they drove over to dig Helnie up under cover of darkness. While they were at work a man who had been drinking Spanish quiare came along feeling like Franco himself. After a little investiga tion he decided to play a prank on the fellows. He concealed him self until they brought the dead man out and placed him In the hearse and went hack to fill up the empty grave. Then he lock the corpse out and placed it where he had been hiding, then lay down in the hearse Instead of the dead man. The grave filled, the two men took their seats in the hearse and proceeded toward town. In the meantime the man posing as the corpse, being a lit tle groggy, fell asleep, .^s the hears3 went jogging along for some distance over the rough road he became uncomfortable and woke up. Still groggy he had forgotten just what he had done. Looking out and seeing nothing but darkness, hearing a rumbling noise and smelling sulphur fumes, as he thought, he ex claimed: "Dead and In hell, shoern the devil." The driver went out on one side, his partner out on the other, and disai>- peared in the darkness. Wonder who will claim the hearse—^Brit ain or Russia!
