Mrs. Joe Canter Is
Bridge Club Hostess
Mrs. Joe Canter entertained for
the members of the Pastime
bridge club at her home on C ]
Street Friday evening having
guests for two tables of bridge.
Prises were awarded to Mrs.
Harry Kerley for high score, to
Mrs. Page Choate for second
high, Mrs. Johnson Sanders, bin
go, and Mrs. Bob Kite honors.
The table appointments, and the
dessert course served during the
evening were In keeping ' with
Valentine day.

Class In Meeting
The February meeting of the
Ila Holman Bible class of the
Wilkesboro Baptist church was
held Thursday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Jim Yates, Mrs. J.
? Turner, the president, whs In
warge of the business Bession
and Mrs. Myrtle Freeland gave
the devotions and program, us
ing as her topic, "Set Your House
In Order." Prayers were offered
by Mrs. Freeland and Mrs. J. W.
Neel, and "He iLeadeth Me" was
sung as the opening hymn. In
serving refreshments at the close
of the meetelng the hostess was
aided by Mrs. Zack Ferguson.
Malinda Duncah
Feted at Party
Mrs. Isaac Duncan entertained
at a Valentine party at her home
on C Street Thursday afternoon
honoring her daughter, Malinda,
whp will he seven years old the
last of the month, hut does not
have a birthday date. Malinda
born on February 29th has only
celebrated one birthday. Twenty
five boys and girls were present
for the occasion and were given
attractive Valentine favors, and
the ice cream served at the close
of the afternoon was in heart
shape molds. In a number of
games and oontests prises were
awarded to Toby Smith, Sammy
Osborne, Sarah Jane Payne, and
Sarah Lpn Chlpman. In the en
tertainment of the children Mrs.
Duncan had the assistance of
Mrs. Dermont Smith, Mrs. Paul
Osborne, Misses Betty and Donna
Smith.

Names Officers
The Y. W. A. of the Wilkes
boro Baptist church met at the,
home of Miss Betty Haworth on
Monday, February 17, with the
leader, Mts. W. N. Brookshire
and the counselor, Mrs. Dwight
Williamson, and eight girls ? be
ing present." In a previous meet
ing the fundamentals of the Y.
W. A. were given by Mrs. Brook
shire. The following officers
were elected:
Presdient, Betty Haworth; vice
president, Carolyn Byrd; secre
tary, Marie Minton; treasurer,
Ruth Steelman. Also it was de
cided to meet twice a month.
An interesting program was
given at the second meeting, the
topic 'beiiysr, "Missions For the
Jews." i'he devotionals were led
by Mrs. Brookshire and group
songs were enjoyed. At the close
of the program, delicious re
freshments were enjoyed by all.
The next meeting will be held
March 3, at 7:30 o'clock at the
home of Mrs. Dwight Williamson.

After a short trip Mr. and Mrs.
Kelly will be with the bride's
parents. Mrs. Kelly has been
employed by Jefferson Standard
Life Insurance Company since
her graduation from Senior
High School last year. Mr. Kel
ly, whose family came here a
year ago, was graduated from
North Wllkeeboro High Schobl
and served four years in the ma
rine eorps. He 'is n^w employed
by Gibbs Machine Company.

W. M, S. Meets
The February meeting of the
W. M. S. of Pleasant Home
church was held with Mrs. Clate
Bumgarner. '.
The devotional period was led
by Mrs., Ernest Walker. The
business session was in - charge
of the president, Mrs. A.T. Nich
ols. For personal service it, was
agreed that the Society help ia
needy family in the community.
"The program topic,; "Jews and
Arabians," was in charge of Mrs.
Bumgarner, assisted by several of
the members.
The'March meeting will be
held with Miss Cora McNeill.
After the program Mrs. Bum
garner, assisted by Mrs. Paul
Delp, served delicious cake affd
coffee.

Garden Club Has
Dinner Meeting
The Garden Department of the
North Wilkesboro Woman's club
met ht the home of Mrs. Edd P.
Gardner lhst Tuesday evening,
six-thirty o'clock, for a covered
dish supper with Mrs. W. F, Gad
dy and Mrs. Ivey Moore as as
sociate hostesses. The dining
room was^ artistically decorated
with miniature heart trees in
keeping with the Valentine sea
! son. Dinner Was served buffet
style amid the soft glow' of red
candles on the table and buffet.
There were twenty-two members
present.
After the dinner the group
; was invited into the living room
for;the business session with the
president, Mrs. Edd F. Gardner,
presiding. The club voted to
plant several small dogwood
trees at the Woman's clubhouse,
at the approaches to the city as
well as in the city, and to give
several trees and shrubs .to the
colored school In Woodlawn,
providing the colored P.-T. A..
will sponsor putting them out.
The club also voted to send five
dollars to buy garden seeds for
Finland.
The president read a letter
j from Mrs. J. W. Bunn telling a
j bout, the garden tour of the
south including the gardens and
beautiful homes In Nantches.
The topic of the month being
birds, the meeting was then
turned over to Mrs. Rufus
Church,. chairman of the bird
committee. She presented the
following members, Mrs. R. j.
Hinshaw, who gave a talk on sun
rise concert on the porch, Mrs.
Staton Mclver first arrivals In
spring,* Mrs. Ivey Moore sweet
singers of the meadows, and Mrs.'
Jack Swofford, who gave a talk
on how to lure birds to your
homes and gardens.

Phillips' on Thursday night, Feb.
15, with 10 members and 17 vis
itors present.
The meeting was opened with
a song, "What A Friend." The
devotional reading was taken
from Matthew 7th chapter and
was followed by prayer.
After the business session, an
other sale was conducted to
raise funds toward the building
fund of the new church.
At the close of the sale refresh
ments were served 'by the hos
tess.

Mrs. Ivey Moore presented Mrs
C. H. Cowles, of the Wilkesboro
club, who introduced the speak
er, Mrs. Anderson, who made a
most interesting talk on inter
national - relations. x
Mrs. J. Q. Adams, the presi
dent, presided for a short bus
iness session during which time
it waB voted to sponsor the Can
cer Drive beginning the first of
April. Mrs. Moore presented Mrs.
Anderson with a gift from the
club.

and Mrs. Cowles. Covers were
laid for eight, and the two hos
tesses-presented Mrs. Anderson
with a corsage.

with a crystal bowl filled with
red roses and fern flanked by
crystal candlesticks holding white
tapers.
The Valentine note was em
phasized with one crystal plat
ter of. sandwiches being cat in
heart ehape, spread with a red
mixture of pimento cheese
spread.
