Stambaugh, "What advantage would there be .for me to belong to The Ameri can Legion?" Stambaugh saw that the oolonel was a strong, healthy, resourceful young Amer ican in full possession of his fa culties, and replied, "The Amer ican Legion has no advantages to offer you Colonel. You have oome out of this mess with no disabili ties. You do not need the Legion. All the Legion could offer you would be an opportunity to work your head off for the fellowB, who were less fortunate than you in the outoome of their service." That's the kind of veterans The American Legion welcomes into its ranks, who want to work their heads off for the welfare of their disabled comrades, of the war widows, of the war or phans, of all underprivileged children, for national security, for 100 per cent Americanism and for making their commun ity a better place in which to live.?Contributed. The little red flowers came from Oteen where they were made by disabled veterans employed by the Auxiliary. "The poppies are crepe paper replicas of the wild poppies which grow in France and Bel gium where so many of the bat tles of both wars were- fought," explained Mrs. Henry Landon. 'They are the popples which grew 'between the crosses, row on row,' in the World War 1 bat tle cemeteries and so became the memorial flower for the wST dead. Now they symbolise mem ory for those who died for Amer ica on land, sea and in the air in every part of the world. "Each flower is made by hand by a disabled veteran, the paper petals carefully attached to the wire stem and shaped to resem ble the blooms with which nature decorated the battle field graves, i The work gives the disabled men something interesting to do dur-j ing the long hours of hospitali zation and convalescence. It oc cupies their hand and minds, j helping them get well. It also1 enables them to earn money, i which builds their morale and makes things easier for them selves and families." The poppies are being unpack ed and counted by the Auxiliary's poppy committee and made rea dy for the volunteer workers who will distribute them in all parts of the city on Poppy Day. No price will be asked for the lit tle flowers hut everyone receiv ing one will be asked to con tribute something for the wel fare' of the disabled veterans, their families and the families of the dead . . ."The Poppy Day contribution makes possible the Legion Auxiliary's extensive re habilitation and child welfare work," Mrs. Landon said.
