w SOCIAL NEWS Clubs, Parties, Church Activities, Etc. Woman's Bible Class Met Tuesday The monthly meeting of the womu'i Bible class, First Meth odist church was held at the home of Mrs. R. M. Brame, Sr., on Ninth street Tuesday after noon with Mrs. Rom H. Pearson as associate hostess. Nineteen were present including two vis itors, Mrs. W. P. Ingram and Mr. James B. Brnnsen. Mrs. W. F.' Gaddy was in charge of the devotions with the prayer being offered by Mrs Brame, and Miss Jo Lassiter gave another chapter in the Bible study on steward ship. Mrs. .C. B. Lomax, the pres ident, presided for the business session. Refreshments were serv ed during the social hour. Miss Elizabeth Barber Hostess to Auxiliary Miss Elisabeth Barber was hos tess to the members of the Epis copal Auxiliary in their monthly meeting held at her home Tues day evening. Mrs. L. B., Dula, Br., gave the devotions and was in charge of the business ses sion. Mrs. C. H. Cowles gave the program, which was an article on the religion of the flag in con nection with Independence Day. Refreshments were served dur ing the social hour at , which time Mrs. J. C. Milligan, of Pit tsburgh, Pa., daughter of Mrs. W. T. Challingsworth, came in as a special guest. Circles of the Wilkesboro Baptist church are meeting on Tuesday as follows: Circle No. 1, Mrs. W. N. Brookshire, 2:80 p. m. Circle No. ft, Missp Louise Wright, 8 p. m. Circle No. 8, Mrs. Vernon Stroud, 2:80 p. m. Circle No. 4, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, 8 p. m. The Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Wil kesboro Methodist church will meet Tuesday afternoon, three o'clock, at the home of Mrs. W. M. DeBerry. The delegate sent by the Society to the Hanes Institute for colored workers in Winston-Salem will give a report of the Institute. Hie members of the Wesley an Service Guild of the Wilkes boro Methodist church, with their families^ will be enter tained at a fish fry on Tues day evening at the Johnson Sanders' cabin at the Catawba Dam. Lewis Jonnson Entertains Her Club The members of the Young Matrons Contract club and some extra guests were delightfully en tertained by Mrs. Lewis Johnson at the home of Mrs. R. H. Shell on C Street Monday evening. Bridge was ?played at three ta bles and was followed by a froz en salad at close of play. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Harry Pearson for high score, to Mrs. D. L. Crook for second high, and to Mrs. E. S. Cooper for bingo. Miss Mabel Champion Weds Mr. Smithey Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Howard Champion, of Raleigh, announce the marriage of their daughter, Mabel Claire Champion, to Ma son Winfield Smithey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Winfield Smith ey, of Roaring River. The candlelight ceremony took place at the home of the bride groom's parents at 5:30 o'clock in the afternoon on December 24. The Rev. Howard J. Ford offici ated. Best man was Calvin Smithey, brother of the groom. The bride wore a soldier blue woolen dress trimmed in gold and light pink, with brown ac cessories. Her shoulder corsage was of pink roses. Mrs. Smithey is a graduate of Needham Broughton High school. Mr. Smithey is a graduate of Roaring River high school and served over three years in the army, two years of which was spent in Europe. He is now em ployed by the State Highway and Public Works Commission. The couple are making their home in Raleigh. Benefit Card Party Given Fridqy Night . The benefit card party spon sored by the North Wilkesboro Woman's club on Friday evening and held at the Woman's club house proved to be a most suc cessful affair. Cards were played at eighteen tables and preced ing play refreshments were serv ed. The top score prize in bridge went to Mrs. Wade Wallace, in rook to Mrs. Murphy Hunt, and in setback to Mr. J. C. Reins. Those winning bingo awards were Mrs. Howard Bowers, Mrs. Gwyn Gambill, and Mrs. J. D. Moore, Sr. A neat sum of money was realized from the party, the proceeds to be used to buy drapes for the clubhouse, which has re cently been redecorated. T. E. L. Class Holds Monthly Meeting The members of the T. E. L. class of the First Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. H. Grady Nichols, with Mrs. W. A. Bullls as co-hostess, for their monthly business and social meeting Tues day evening. Mrs. George Camp bell, president, presided and led the devotions, and the prayer! was offered by Mrs. A. C. Den-' nis. Refreshments were served to the eleven members attending, during the social hour. Wilkesboro Club In Final Meeting The final meeting for the cur rent club year of the Wilkesboro Woman's club was held on Fri day evening at the Community House with Mesdames Edward P. Bell, R. D. Smith, W. M. DeBer ry, Lawrence Miller, and Miss Blanch^ Ferguson as associate hostesses. Guest speaker for the meeting was Mrs. Edd F. Gard Ser, chairman of the North Wll esboro Garden club, who spoke on Garden clnbs and gave a re port of the State meeting of Garden clubs she attended re cently in Asheville. The presi dent, Mrs. Lawrence Miller, pre ? Bided for the usual business session. Twenty-one members and three visitors were present and were served tempting re freshments during the social hour by the hostesses. Mis? Watts Extended Several Courtesies A Several courtesies were extend ed during the week to Miss Alice Dare Watts, who on Saturday was married to William Hilton Crews, of North Wilkesboro and Lake Wales, Fla. On Tuesday evening the bride-elect's sister, Miss Clara Lee Watts, entertain ed a number of guests at a rummy party at the Watts home, and after several games the hos tess assisted by her mother, Mrs. Flnley Coleman Watts, served cookies, sandwiches, and cof fee. Thursday evening the Young i Peoples Choir of the New Hope | Baptist church, where the wed- j ding took place, gave Miss Watts a handkerchief shower on the lawn fm lowing choir practice. In presenting the handkerchiefs Lit tle Miss Mary Jane Dller, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Roby Eller*, came on the lawn, singing "Here Comes The Bride," and handed to the honoree a large picture of the bride, which was dressed with the handkerchiefs. Cookies and Coca-Colas were served. After the rehearsal Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Fletcher entertained at their home at the cake cutting for the bridal couple and memtbers of the wedding party. The living room and hall were decorated in artistic arrangements of buddleia and chrysanthemum leicanthe mun\, while the appointments for the dining room were in the bridal green and white. The din ing table, covered with a lace cloth, was centered with a three tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom. The cake, placed on a reflector, was encircled with gyps hophelia and rthodendron leaves. The punch bowl, arranged on the serving table, was graced with a massive arrangement of lark spur and feverfew. After the bridal couple had cut the first slice of cake, Mrs. Michael Schwartz finished cutting the cake and was assisted in the serving by Misses f course) .
