Program goes into effect in January. According to statistics of the National Safety Council, 17 per cant
of all motor vehicle accidents are caused by cars with faulty equipment. The Mechanical Inspection Program
was passed by the 1947 General Assembly "for your safety"—-to cut down on North Carolina's high accident
and fatality rates. The new law requires that all vehicles must be inspected once during 1948 and twice a year
thereafter. Three principal points that will be stressed in the inspection program are SEEING, STEERING, AND
STOPPING, which will take care of lights, brakes, steering assembly, mirrors, horn, windshield wiper, wheel
alignment, and tires. ' i

Passes In Florida!
Mrs. Ida Laffitte, long-time
resident of Lloyd, Fla., died yesterday
morning at 10:20 at the
home of her daughter, Miss Pearl
Laffitte, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mrs. Laffitte had been in ill
health for the past several years.
•Mrs. Laffitte was the daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. L.
Sydnor, of this city, and Richmond,
Va., and was the widow
of Mr. Jt. B. Laffitte, of Lloyd,
Fla. Burvjying her are three sons.
Dr. Sydnor Laffitte, Messrs.
Montague "and Garvin Laffitte,
and two daughters Misses Blise
and Vearl Laffitte, all of Florida;
also two sisters, Mrs. J. W.
White and Mrs. J. B. Spainhour,
of the Wilkedboroe, and one brother,
Mr. EL B. Sydnor, of Rich-,
mond, Va. Another .brother, Mr.
W. A. Sydnor, of this city, is deceased^.

Mrs. Laffitte had visited here
on numerous occasions and had
many friends in the county who
will regret to learn of her death.

of the campaign, reported today.
This is substantially over the
amount of receipts last year but
the goal this time is $2,500, Mrs.
Moore said, and late receipts are
counted on to reach the goal.
She also pointed oat that the
greater part of the receipts will
be In the fight against tuberculosis
in Wilkes coanty and urged
those who have not made return
for the seals received to send
their checks - this week. Commenting
on use of the funds, Mrs.
Moore pointed out that mnch of
the funds accumulated in Wilkes
were used advantageously
in the re-openlng of the Wilkes
Tuberculosis hospital."*
Apples Are SoM
A unique project was carried
ont here Immediately before the
holidays. The plan for the project
wag made by A. B. Johnston
and was carried out with
remarkable success for the purpose
of buying a pennmothorax
machine for the tuberculosis hospital.
Apples were donated by Mr.
Johnston, W. H. H. Waugh, Virgil
Church and H. H. Morehouse.
A stand was erected st the corner
of Main and Ninth streets,
and the beautiful apples were
Individually wrapped and sold
for whatever the customer would
give. Mrs. Moore was aided in
this project by Mrs. Mary Moore
Hlx and the net profits were
$188.06. Apples were sold individually
from ten cents to five
dollars eaeh.
