this spring will help to make up
for the pastures and alfalfa yon
failed to set seeded last fall, says
Sam H. Dobeon, Extension Agron
omy specialist st State College.
Late summer and early fall
seedings are preferred bnt many
sneceesful ladino clover pastures
hare been realised throughout
the state when seeded in the
spring, Mr. Dobeon said. He
pointed out thafthe chances ol
failure are greater in the spring
and the yield the first year will
be less, but it eeeitys that where
fall seeding wa« Impossible there
are cases where the need for
grasing will justify taking the
chance.
* Even though alfalfa" can be
seeded in the spring, the chances
of success are so slim that It is
generally not advisable except in
the mountains. If your hay sup
ply is short, he suggests that you
seed lespedeta or soybeans tor
hay this spring and get ready for
alfalfa in the late summer.
If it is a question of seeding
ladino clover pastures or alfalfa,
it wonld he better to seed ladino
clover because the ladino will
thicien up in case of a poor early
stand while alfalfa will not.
Partners who are planning on
Dallis grass and iesipedeza, seed
ing in the spring is the recom
mended practice, he said.
Regardless of whether late
summer or spring seedings are
made, a good level of fertility and
a good seedbed are necessary.
Also, the Ume requirements must
be met, and 600 to 800 pounds
of 2-12-12 fertiliser per acre
should be put on the ladino clov
er pastures at seeding time, Mr.
Dobeon said.

The lowest egg-feed ratio ever
recorded for December wu ex
isting in December 1947, accord
ing to C. Brice Ratchford, in
charge of Farm Management for
the State College Extension Ser
vice.
It is expected that the egg
feed ratio will continue low at
least until spring, when esti
mates for the 1948 grain crop
are available, the specialist said.
If, at that time, a large feed crop
is predicted, the ratio should rise,
he added.
Despite higher feed coats,' egg
prices are not likely to rise, he
said. At present, egg prices are
only 96 par cent of parity or 3
per cent above support level. At
the same time, feed prices are
well above 100 per cent of parity.
The poultry Industry has made
real progress in North Carolina
during the last 10 years, Mr.
Ratchford said. Poultry is norm
ally a good enterprise for Tai
Heel farmers, as there are read;
markets, and poultry fits in well
on small farms. For these and
other reasons, North Carolina
needs to maintain her poultry
industry. The situation should
improve within a few months oi
in a year at the latest. ^
Farmers who are losing monej
cannot stay in the business, but
those who are making -a little
money and keeping their poultry
will be able to realize more profit
when the situation does improve,
he said.
Usually such chicks live bet
ter ana grow;::
hatched chicks, Prof,
said, providing there is
breeding in back of the chicks
and careful management is prac
ticed. -*
Generally speaking, he said,
the American breeds hatched
from March 1 to 15 should give
the desired results. Leghorns
hatched from March 15 to April
15 should produce early eggs
with a minimum chance of molt.
Orders should be placed at
once by those desiring such
chloks, Prof. Dearstyne said, be
cause many of the hatcheries are
booked fv in advance.
