Mrs. Roy Crouse Is Feted at Party An outstanding social event of .the week was the large card par ty given by Mrs. William K. Newton and Mrs. T. S. Jenrette at the Woman's clubhouse on Trogdon Street Tuesday evening complimenting Mrs. Roy Crouse, the former Miss Nina Call. Bridge was played at nine tables and rook at one table arranged in a festive setting of mixed spring blossoms. A dessert course was served at the beginning of play, and punch during the eve ning. High and low score prizes in bridge were won by Mrs. M. B. McNeil and Mrs. P. C. Forester and in rook by Mrs. Ira Payne. Mrs. J. M. Derr, Jr., held the traveler's prize and Mrs. J. W. Powell was the winner in bingo. The honoree received from the hostesses a corsage of white car nations and crystal in her pat tern. Millers Creek Basket Ball Team Honored at Dinner Mr. and Mrs. Lin Bumgarner and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Clark were hosts at a dinner party at the Clark home at Millers Creek Saturday evening honoring the Millers Creek high school All Star Basketball team. (Around thirty were present including the manager of the team and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Burle son, and wives and girl friends of the team members. After the dinner informal games were en joyed. Green and white, the bas ket ball colors, were emphasized in the decorations and table ap pointments. o Refugees from Communist rule outnumber those from Nazis. The North Woman's Clul Senior W Met On / the clubhouse on Trogdon Street. I The president, Mrs. J. Quincy Adams, presided over the meet ing. Mrs. Robert Gibbs spoke on the Conservation of Youth, point ing out a number of things that were being done for the young people of the community and urging the group to assist In the various youth projects, particul arly the Scout work. The topic for the afternoon was "Town Beautiful." Mrs. Ar thur Venable, as leader, said that our homes and town represent ed our personalities. Mrs. Edd Gardner, president of the Garden Club, outlined the work of the club in beautifying plots In town, the colored school grounds, and the county hospital. Mrs. A.. C. Chamberlain discussed flower arrangements, based on the short course she attended in Ashevllle. The members of the Garden Club had on display a large number of very original and artistic ar rangements. In order to share with the general public these ar rangements, the club hel<j open house again after the short meet ing of the Junior Woman's Club, beginning at 8 o'clock. Hostesses for afternoon were Mesdames A. C. Chamberlain, J. B. Carter, E. P. Hettlger, L. S. Lowe, E. O. Triplett, Watt Coop-, er, Cecil Hauss, and Miss Toby Turner. Refreshments were serv ed to 39 members and visitors. Woman's Society Met Tuesday Evening The April meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the North Wllkesboro First Methodist chnrch was held Tuesday evening at the home of Miss Lois Scroggs having twen ty-four members presenj. Mem bers of the Franklin circle were in charge of the program the theme of which was "The Earth and Her Increase." Miss Jo Las Biter led the devotions, Miss Dot Bell and Mrs. H. M. Bivens told about the work of the rural churches. Mrs. James C. Mills, the pres ident, was in charge of the bus iness session during which time the usual reports were heard, it was decided to hold the spring mission study on Tuesday eve ning, May 18, at the Woman's clubhouse, the same plan to be used as for last fall's mission study. This study will take the place of the regular Society meet ing for May. Mrs. Paul Billings Hostess at Tea On Saturday afternoon, April 17, a lovely tea was held at the home of Mrs. Paul Billings hon oring Misses Sallie Outlaw and Lena Long. Miss Otulaw, who was visiting in North Wilkes ,boro during the week-end, la a former member of the Public School faculty. Miss Long, a pres ent member of the faculty, is to be married In the summer. Both honorees were presented a gift by the hostess. Beautiful flower arrangements of spring flowers decorated the he ie.
