-The chamber, through its Flood
Control Committee, is continuously
working for the development of
an adequate flood control program
in the Yadkin valley including de
tention dams, soil conservation and
reforestation. This project is of
vital importance to ? the protection
of our industries. and agricultural
lands in the river basin, and to
further growth throughout this
area.
VI?Governmental Affairs
(1) The chamber is constantly
alert to local, s^ate and federal leg
islation which may affect us locally.
(2) The Wilkes Chamber has
worked for the establishment of a
Highway Post Office from Greens
boro to Johnson City, Tenn.
(3) Opposed toll charges on Blue
Ridge Parkway.
(4) Worked with national Park
way officials regarding completion
of Parkway between Deep Gap and
Blowing Rock, N. C.
(5) Worked with local and dis
trict telephone company regarding
improved service, local and long
distance.
VIII?Industrial Development
(1) Organized Industrial and In
vestment Corporation to aid in se
curing new industry.
(2) Continuous study of appropri
ate industries suitable for this area.
(3) Now in contact with five in
dustries regarding locating in this
area.
(4) Cooperating with local indus
try in personnel relations, safety
programs, transportation problems,,
etc.
(5) Expansion ih local industry
in the last two years includes Sky
land Textile Company, Wilkes
Mountain Poultry Products Com
pany and expansion of Wilkes
Hosiery Mills.
VIII?Public Health
(1) Sponsored hospital expan
sion program which resulted in the
voting of bonds to pay for the
town's part in the building of a 100
bed hospital.
(2) Encouraged better garbage
disposal and cooperated in the DDT
spraying program.
IX?Roads
(1) Worked closely with the State
Highway Department regarding im
provement of rural roads in county,
and have been informed that a por
tion of the Traphill road will be
built about next summer.
