Less Ambitions
And Live Longer
New York, N. Y.—If you're the
type that likes to take things
easy, you'll get a lot more out
of life than ^our ambitious
friends.
Too many of us are dogged
by excessive ambition or a sense
of failure, declares Dr. Matthew
N. Chappell in the January Journ
al of Living. We are constantly
disquieted by the feeling that we
must get more, do more or be
more—that we are inadequate in
some way.
To still a this uneasiness of
what he calls false ambition, Dr.
Chappell advises giving more
thought to the basic things ex
pected of us—and stop worrying
about the rest.
Few of us are required to lead
the nation or become powers in
labor or industry. But we are ex
pected to conduct our relations
with other people in such a way
as to yield them maximum hap
piness and benefit.
We have no duty to acquire
great wealth, but merely to pro
vide for ourselves and our fam
ilies. It's not mandatory that we
become great athletes. It is suff
icient just to take normal cara
of our bodies and health. Nor
need we all set out to be reform
ers, bemoaning all the* ills and
injustices of life. But we should
understand the development °'
our own emotional attiudes and
control them in such a way that
we do not add to the ills of the
world.
To attain a mature personality
says the Journal of Living art
icles, we need to simplify our out
look. Relief from false ambition
will make us better and happier
human beings.
