Fire Monday
West Jefferson, Jan. 6.—The!
Jefferson high school gymnasium, j
which was built In 1932-33, was i
totally destroyed by fire of anj
unknown origin Monday night, '
resulting In an estimated loss of
$<20,000. |
While It could not definitely
be determined, it is believed that
the fire started near the range
or flue In the lunchroom in the
basement of the gymnasium. The
fire was , first discovered by
Miss Laura McConnell, who saw
the blaze in the lunchroom kitch
en. ;

was brought into action imme
diately, but the shortage of wat- i
er made It; impossible to curb the j
blaze, which spread quickly
throughout the building.
School officials estimated the
loss of the building and lunch
room equipment, on which there
was no insurance, to be around j
$20,000. .All of the equipment in |
the building was completely de-1
stroyed. j

Whittingtop with 24 members

The president, Mrs. Wiley
Brooks, cabled the meeting to
order, asking the members to
stand and ; sing "We Believe in
Our State.?' Mrs. Ida Deal led
the devotional. After the busi
ness session, Mrs. Annie H. Green
gave a much needed discussion on
club work, beginning with the
county leaders and ending with
the national leaders. For the i
first time some of us learned that
Home Dembnstratlon work was
the largest organization for wom
en in the world.
Mrs. Quipcy Whittington, as
sisted by Mrs. Ruth Beamon,
sefved delicious refreshments,
consisting of Russian Tea, potato
chips, cookies and candy.
The next meeting will be In;
the home of Mrs. G. R. Andrews.
