Met Monday Evening
On Monday evening the Jun
ior Woman's club met in the rec
reation room of the Gardner
home. The program tor the eve
ning was one of the most inter
esting and informative thus far
this year.
Miss Mary Caroon presented
Mr. 8am Ogilvie, chairman of the
"March of Dimes" campaign tor
the Wilkes County Chapter, who
spoke for the first part of. the
program. Mr. Ogilvie stressed the
urgent need for attaining the
quota set up for Wilkes county
(to help fight the much feared
'disease of Infantile Paralysis.
"Bducatlon in North Carolina
Today and Tomorrow," a most
stirring and enlightened movie
*as presented as the second half
of the evenings program.
The movie gave facts and sta
tistics of the findings of an Edu
cational Survey made in North
Carolina last year by appoint
ment of the governor.
The movie was narrated by
Mrs. Hight Helms.
During the business session It
was decided that January 29,1
would be the date for the White
' Elephant and Rummage Sale,
with the time and place to be
named later.
Plans are being made by the
music committee for a concert to
be held sometime in March fol
lowing the Community Concert J
series.
The Junior Woman's Club!
voted to sponsor an art contest'
in the Wilkes County Elementary |
schools.
The club voted to receive as [
members, Miss Alice Cassel, Mes
dames R. L. Abernathy, Ralph
Frailer, Monroe Williams and
'Robert Morrow.
During the social hour the hos
tesses group, Mesdames Frank
Charles Ziliak, Forest Jones, J.
H. Whicker, Jr., Maurice Walsh,
and Miss Dorothy Jennings, serv
ed refreshments.

The Wilkes County sub-dis
trict meeting of the Methodist
Youth Fellowship was held Mon
day ev6ning at the North Wilkes
boro First Methodist church.
Mrs. Gene McNeil, program di
rector, presented Sgt. A. H.
Clark, who made a most helpful
talk to the young people in stress
ing courtesy on the highway. He
said about 80 per cent of high
way accidents were due to alco
hol, and that Wilkes county led
the state in accidents.

Long, sub-district president from
the Wilkesboro church, presided
for the business session. It was
announced the February meeting
would be held at the Wilkesboro
church.

to Robert Sellstrom Barger, son

ding will take place April 9.
The bride-elect is a graduate of
Virginia Intermont college, Bris
tol, Va., and Syracuse university,
Syracuse, N. Y. She is a member
of Delta Psi Omega honorary
speech fraternity and Alpha Chi
Omega / social sorority. Since
graduation she has been director
of community service an^ wom
en's programs for radio stations
WJTN and WJTN-FM, James
ttown, N. Y. Mr. Barger is a
graduate of the Wharton School
of Finance, University of Penn
sylvania, and Is a member of
Alpha Zeta and Alpha Sigma
Phi, social fraternity. He is a
lieutenant in the U. S. naval re
serve and during the war served

The January meeting of the
Wilkesboro First Methodist
Woman's Society 6f the North
church was held Tuesday after
noon at the home of Mrs. Joe E.
Johnson, having around twenty
present. Members of the Prank
Smoot circle, with Mrs. Gilbert
R. Combs as the leader, gave
the program on "Co-Operation in
Building Christian Character."
Those taking part were Mea
dames. W. F. Gaddy, T. H. Wal
ler, and F. C. Hubbard, Sr. Mrs.
J. C. Mills, the president, presid
ed for routine business, during
which time a number of reports
were heard.
Senior Woman's Club
In Meetina Monday
The monthly meeting of !the
Senior Woman's club was fteld
Monday afternoon at the home
of Mrs. F. C. Forester, having a
round twenty present. Mrs. Tvey
Moore, the president, was | in
charge and heard the usual re
ports. Mrs. Jack Swofford, club
house ground chairman, reported
that twenty-five dogwood trees,
donated by Mrs. H. G. Duncan,
had been planted on the grounds.
Mrs. R. S. Gibbs, program
chairman, presented two Girl
Scouts, who gave a most inter
esting talk. Miss Doris Ann God
bey reported on Girl Scout wprk,
and Miss Frances Harris tola a
bout the needs of youth. . j

Workers Council Has 1
Dinner Meeting
Around twenty members of the
Worker's Council of the North j
Wilkesboro First Methodist
church met in a dinner meeting
Tuesday evening at the Carolina
Restaurant. For the invocation
the group sang "Praise God From
Whom All Blessings Flow," and
following the dinner Mr. Robert
Morrow, church school superin
tendent, presided for a short
business session. Some new teach
ers were Introduced, various re
ports were heard, and * plans
were discussed for moving into
the new educational building at
an early date. Dr. Qilbert R.
Combs, the pastor, dismissed the
group with prayer.

Entertains Her Club
Mrs. Robert Gambill entertain
ed for the members of the Pas
time bridge club at her home in
WllkeBboro Monday evening. The
game, played at two tables, was
fallowed by a dessert course.
Prizes were awarded to Mrs.
Johnson Sanders for high score,
to Mrs. Page Choate second high
score, Mrs. Bob Kite bingo, and
Mrs. Flake Cook the traveler's
award.

Suffers Serious Burns
Elkin.—Mrs. W. M. Wall, 38,
wife of a prominent local jewel
er, was seriously burned early
Monday morning at her home on
North Bridge Street.
The accident is thought to have
resulted from inflammable fluid.
used for cigarette lighters which j
ignited and set her clothing on
fire.
Most serious burns were on
her head and face. Her husband
suffered painfully burned hands
in trying to smother the flames.
She was taken to the local hos
pital for treatment.
