" Miss Blanche Ferguson left Saturday for Centralia, Kansas, to attend the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Mattie Carlton. Mrs. Frank Granor returned Friday after spending laqt week In Raleigh, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Cranor, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. 3. LL Whitaker returned Thursday from spending two weeks in- Miami and other points of interest in Florida. The next meeting of the North Wilkesboro Optimist club will not take place until the second Tuesday In February—the 8th. Mr. W. <J. Gabriel, manager of Belk's Department Store, is a patient of the Wilkes hospital, having undergone a minor oper ation Friday .morning. Mr. Bill Alexander, student of Lees-McRae College at Banner Elk, was home for the week-end. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Alexander. Mr. and Mrs. Hal Snyder will leave tomorrow on a week's mo tor trip to Florida. Mr. Snyder is manager of the local J. C. Pen ney company store. Mrs. James C. McDiarmid, who is spending the winter in Win ston-Salem, spent a few days here last Week In the home of Mrs. C. E. Jenkins. Dr. and Mrs. J. P. Bingham, Jr., and children, Hugh and Janie, of Lexington, visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Johnson Sunday. Mr. Jimmy Hethcock, student at Pfieffer College at Mlsenheim er, visited here for a few days with bis parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Hethcock, during mid-term examinations. Mr. and Mrs. E. G. R'obinette, of Shellman, Ga., and their daughter, Mrs. William Chamb lee, of Columbus, Ga., visited here Wednesday and Thursday with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. F. h. Smith, of Washington, D. C., were week end visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Johnson. Mrs. Smith is remaining here for a few days visit. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Andrews have returned to the city after enjoying a week's motor trip to Florida. They motored down the east coast and made the return trip through the interior of the .state. Mr. J. G. Greene has returned to the city after spending sever al days in Richmond, Va. buying seeds for spring and summer plantings. Mr. Greene is proprie tor of the Cash Fertilizer & Seed Company, of this city. Rev. C. J. Winslow, pastor, Mrs. C. H. Hulcher, Mrs. J. W. White and Mrs- J- Henderson attended a meeting of four dis tricts of the Methodist church held in Statesville Thursday for planning of the Church Advance Program. Ab sher, of Halls Mills, is taking part in cold weather maneuvers off the coast of Alaska while serving aboard the general com munication ship USS Mount Mc Klnley, Flagship of Amphibious Group One. The operations will continue through ' January and February. Absher, who entered the Naval service March 30, 1945, received hie recruit train ing at the Naval Training Center, Bainbridge. Md. Mrs. Joe Barber Bridge Club Hostess Mrs. Joe Barber entertained the members of her bridge club at her home in Wilkesboro Fri day afternoon. Hix was hostess at a lovely party at her home on D Street Friday afternoon, en tertaining friends at three tables of rook. The high and low score awards in the game went to Mrs. Johnson J. Hayes and Mrs. F. C. Forester. in serving a salad course with sweets at the con clusion of play the hostess was assisted by her two daughters, i Mrs. Jack Brame and Mrs. Wil liam Marlow. In all of the party appointments.) Mrs. Richard Chamberlain Feted At Two Events Mrs. A. G. Chamberlain enter tained at a lovely tea at her home on J Street Saturday afternoon honoring her son's wife, Mrs. Richard Alfred Chamberlain, of Shelby, the former Miss Marjorie Ann Weathers. A large number of friends called during the hours, three to five, to greet the hon oree and enjoy the gracious hos pitality of the hostess. Callers were welcomed at the door by Mrs. John E. Justice. Receiving with the hostess were the bride and her mother and sis ter, Mrs. Bynum B. Weathers and Miss Betty Sue Weathers, both of Shelby; and Mrs. R. M. Cham berlain, of Winston-Salem. Mrs. C. E. Jenkins, Sr., and Mrs. J. B. Carter poured tea at the dining room table, which was beautifully appointed in a green, white, and yellow motif.
