Thursday, February 3, 1949 February 6 To 12 Boy Scout Week Did you know that citizenship-training can be an adventure? Take time out during Boy Scout Week, February 6-12, which marks the 39th Birthday of the Boy Scouts of America, to observe in action the theme, "Adven ture—that's Scouting-" and see its far reaching effects. Community service pro jects, emergency service training, safety education, and conservation practices— all of these challenging activities are undertaken by the Boy Scouts of Amer ica. Institutions which sponsor Boy Scout Troops have found many advantages in giving their boys Scouting opportunities. It enables them to add a program of activities, under the general auspices and youth-centered character and citizenship atmosphere of the institution. This tends to strengthen the loyalties of you toward the institution, because Scouting has been billing to lose itself in the institution, and thus become part of the institution. All this brings benefits for the whole com munity, and stimulating satisfaction for our boys. "Boys will be boys," they say. But we're sure you'll agree they'll be better, friendlier, happier boys if they're in the ranks of the Boy Scouts of America. For 39 years, the Boy Scouts have made an increasing contribution to a better America through a well-planned, up-to date program to meet boy's interests. It's a program om adventure that ap peals to every boy, when he knows about it. And there's the rub. Many a boy of 12 or over still needs to be informed of the exciting activities of. Scouting. Many a parent needs to discover the values of Scouting for his boy. Many an adult needs to find out the enjoyment to be derived from helping boys find them selves through Scouting. Many a civic in stitution should look into the merits and advantages of sponsoring a Troop of Boy Scouts. For these reasons we're taking the op portunity—during Boy Scout Week—to fulfill our obligation as an information medium, by reminding you of your respon sibility to the boys of America—the Men of Tomorrow! V .-y j Communists Boring ' From Jhe Inside On the one hand we "cuss" Russia and on the other hand we often encourage communists within our own borders by advocating many radical measures under the guise of social welfare, in which we take from those who have and give to those who haven't. A "People's Legislative Conference" met in Raleigh Saturday and made up a legislative program radical in the extreme. According to a press release we received, there were "Representatives of numerous labor, negro, youth and political organi zations present." Let's take a look at some of the propos als advocated. An unemployment compen sation program with minimum benefits of $25 per week for 26 weeks is one of the points. No one would argue too much a gainst that. It looks good, but let us go a little farther and see what else they want. They would eliminate requirements that jobless are actually seeking work in order to draw the compensation. In other words, these radicals who want to spend other people's money would want to quit work any time and get paid for it, regardless of whether or not they were seeking work. They would also want to draw unemploy ment compensation while on strike. In other words, they would like to get paid with other people's money for deliberate ly refusing to work. This so-called people's conference wbuld have an old-age benefit payment of $100 per month regardless of need. Such proposals look like heaven to those who see only on the surface. But closer study will reveal that such meas ures are un-American, and are calculated to takp us nearer and nearer the commun ist state. If we continue the trend to take from those who earn and have and give to those who have not and who fail to earn, it would not be necessary for Russia to go to war with us, because Russia would al ready have won America to communism from within. ' The trend for more and higher income taxes, more and higher indirect taxes, is dangerous. Every time the percentage of income diverted to taxes goes up we lose just that much more of our liberty. We are surrendering our liberty to spend our own money. Compulsory medical in surance is another illustration of selling our liberty. It is proposed that the gov ernment collect from us a vast sum in pay roll taxes, for which we would receive 47 cents worth of medical care for every dol lar we pay in. The remainder, 53 cents of every dollar, would go to build up a vast governmental bureau with a million em ployes. 1. You will never be happy nursing trou ble and cultivating bad thinking; it will grow up into jealousy and bitterness. Learn to forgive and forget. You can't even get through the Lord's Prayer if you don't. It is almost impossible to keep bad thoughts from coming into the mind, but you don't need to shelter and house them. Remember the old saying, "You can't keep the sparrows from flying overhead, - but you can keep them from building nests in your hair." When bad thoughts come, push them out of the way with good thoughts. Be determined about it. There are always good things to think about. Count your blessings. If you can't do better, think about some of the bad things you haven't got; then be thankful. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is sued a solemn warning, "Agree with your adversary (unkind and unforgiving thoughts, bad acts) quickly while you are in the way with him. Lest the adversary deliver thee to the judge and the judge deliver thee to the officer and thou be cast into prison (embittered life, chains of habit) . . . Thou shalt by no means come out thence till thou hast paid the utter most farthing." Bad thinking creates a poison in your System which destroys happiness, endan gers health. Dr. Stanley Jones has a fine book on this subject, "Is the Kingdom ©£ God Realism," in which he shows hi&W resent ment and hate produce disease, how anx ieties and worry breed illness, how a sense of guilt induces ill health. Self-centered people are unhappy peo ple. If you want to enjoy happiness, put God in the center of your life and put self out. God planned for you to be a member^ of the Divine Family, but you have to accept membership by an act of your Own will. When you accept God as your Fath er, Christ as your Saviour, the Holy Spirit1 as your guide, you are born anew into the Divine Family. This is what the Bible calls5 the new birth. Jesus said, "Except a man be born anew (from above) he cannot See the Kingdom of God," while St* John wrote, "As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the SOns of God " Keep the eyes of your mind and heart on God, "the giver of every good and per fect gift." Follow His leading, and you will walk the way of happiness, peace and contentment.
