! Julius C. Martin, NativeOf Wilkes, Funeral Feb. 12 I Funeral service for Julius C. Martin, retired special assistant to the United States Attorney General, were held Saturday morning, February 12, in the Chevy Chase Baptist church. Chevy Chase, Md. Burial was in Rock Creek cemetery in Washington, D. C. The last rites were attended by many of the notables i of the nation's capital. Mr. Martin died early February 9, after a year of declining health and several weeks' serious illness. He had retired from the Department of Justice in October, 1947. From Thursday morning until Saturday his body lay in state at his home, 6520 Western Avenue, Chevy Chase. Son of Capt. Augustus Harrfj son Martin, C. S. A., who was kill! ed three days before Lee surj rendered; and Susan Virginia Corpening Martin, Julius Martin was born October 2, 1861 at the old James and Augustus Martin home on the Yadkin, opposite Roaring River. In early life he attended the Dellaplane school in Antioch township and Oak Hill Academy in Grayson County, Virginia. In the early eighties he attended University of North Carolina and organized a fraternity there, later merged with Beta Theta Pi. He was also a student of Col. George N. Folk's law school on the Upper Yadkin and . was graduated from it in 1888. | Before beginning the practice of law, Mr. Martin taught briefly in Wilkes; at Cove Creek, Watauga county; and in Tennessee. Going to Asheville in 1888, he was engaged in the practice of law first with Judge Gudger and later with Thomas S. Rollins and George H. Wright in the law firm of Martin, Rollins and Wright. He was also mayor and city attorney of Asheville. He lived in Asheville from 1888 to 1924 and also in 1932-33. In 1911 he represented Buncombe in the State Senate and in 1933 in the State House of Representatives. He was author of the Martin Act and the State Bar Act. After serving briefly as attorney for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Mr. Martin was, in 1934, made special assistant to the U. S. Attorney General, serving until 1947. From 1936 to 1942 he was Director of the Bureau of War Risk Litigation, U. S. Department of Justice. He was a lawyer for 61 years. From childhood Mr. Martin was a member of the Baptist church, having first joined Old Brier Creek church in Wilkes. He is survived by his widow, Helen Emilie Werres, whom he married in 1891; three sons, Col. Harrison A. Martin, Red Bank, N. J.; Attorney Julius Martin, Jr., Washington, D. C.; and Norman I F. Martin, Chevy Chase, Md.; six grandchildren; and one half sister, Mrs. Celia M. Lane, of Washington and North Wilkesboro. Julius C. Martin was a brother of the late Dr. J. Everett Martin and a half brother of the late David B, and T. Frank Mastin, all of Blnefield, W. Va. He was also a 'brother of the late Mrs. Laura Martin Linney and a half brother of the late Mrs. N. T. Jarvis, both of Roaring River, Route 2. Mr. Martin was an uncle of Miss Ruth Linney, Mrs. J. L. Mathis, Mrs. Lois Jarvis Roberts, Noah Jarvis, Jr., of Roaring River Route 2, and of Mrs. Turner Church of Boomer. Scouts District Meeting Tuesday On Tuesday at 7:00 p. m. March 8, the regular monthly meeting of the Wilkes District committee of the Boy Scouts of America will be held at the Duke Power company Jointly with the Commissioners Staff, all Scoutmasters In the county and as many troop committeemen as can possibly attend. This joint meeting of practically all Scouters in ♦he county Is being held for a concentrated study o f better "couttag methods.
