MISS MAMIB SOCKWELL — EDITOR Mrs. Mitchell Hostess To Handiwork Club The members of the Handwork club nad three extra guests were delightfully entertained 'by Mrs. J. W. Mitchell at her home on Pith Street Thursday evening. In a ame of bingo played at three tables Mrs. Clay Pardue was the wlner of a lovely hand mirror. Mrs.' 4. L. Pardue, the president,1 was In charge of the business session. - j Guests of the club were Mesdames Vernon Mahaffey L. T.! Phillips and Ann Bogleman, the latter two receiving going away gifts or from the hostess Mrs. Phillips is gooing to Hickory for residence and Mrs. Fogleman to Grensboro. At the close of the evening the hostess served tempting refrehme Har t rahr tempting refreshments. Mrs. Buren ates is scheduled t the next hostess for the club. Episcopal Auxiliary In Monthly Meeting Mrs. Paul Osborne was hostess to the members of the Episcopal Auxiliary in their monthly meetiSg held Tuesday evening at her ^Kme in Wilkesboro. Mrs. Monroe Williams led the devotions^ and Brs. B. R. Underwood, the pre■dent, presided for routine business. Refreshments were enjoyed piping the social hour. Sub-District Meeting H^J In Wilkesboro Thirty young people attended the Wilkes County Sub-district meeting of the Methodist Youth Fellowship held at the Wilkesboro Methodist church Monday evening. For the worship program, directed by C. C. Brooks Millers Creek, adrama, The Craftsman of Galilee-His Tools,! was given by Misses Margaret Anderson; Nell Gwyn Brame, Nor h Carolina Miss Ruth Long and Edgar Terrel Wilkesboro. Miss Long presided tor the business session and Miss Jo Lassiter directed the recreational period. At the close of the evening the host church served refreshments. The next meeting is scheduled to be held at the First Methodist church in North Wilkesboro, March 21. McE<wee> who gave a stirring and informative talk on "Carl Marx, and Communism." Mrs. Gordon Finley "Regent" presided over the business session. Mrs. R. G. Finley chairman of Building Promotion, presented plans for this project. Miss Elizabeth Finley. Ellis Island chairman, received a cash donation for this work. Miss Ruiby Blackburn Registrar, read the following names of new members: Mrs. Lura Deans Coffey, Mrs. Rose Scroggs Harvel, Mrs. Clyde Scroggs Lillard, Mrs. Douglas McElwee, Miss Lois Scroggs. The "iStar Spangled Banner" was sung at the close of the meeting. The guests were invited to the dining room where delicious refershments were served. Tea were poured by Miss Ruby Blackburn. o Tharpe-Cousins Engagement Mr. J. K. Tharpe, of Ronda, announces the engagement and approaching marriage of his daughter, Mary Jane to Major Thomas Cousins, son of Mrs. M. T. Carlton Monday, February 21, for its regular meeting. The meeting was opened with the singing of ''America," the club collect was read in unison. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and 16 members answered the roll by telling what they have done in their gardens. A report was given on the Bingo party which was very successful nad we wish to thank all who helped to make it so, especially the merchants of the two Wilkesboros and Boomer. Mrs. Greene gave a very good talk on "Take Time to bo a Good Citizen". She stressed the qualities and responsibilities of a good citizen beginning in the home and extending to the school church, community, and county, We also had a quiz on "know your county'^ the officers and their duties. Red Cross literature was given out to the members and each one asked to help with the drive which is now on. " During the social period we had an apron contest. The women paraded around with their aprons on until the clothing leaders, Mrs. John Andrews and Mrs. Greene, decided thVt the first prize should go to Mrs. J. E. Brown for the prettiest and Mrs. I. J. Broyhill for the most serviceable.. Delicious refreshments were were served by the hostess and her daughter -in-law Mrs. Burton Carlton. Child Rearing Failures Laid Upon Parents SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 28— (AP)—The chief reason for failure in child rearing> said a Duke University specialist today may be described in three blunt words: "D,—fool parents.'' The speaker was Dr. Leslie B. Hohman, neuropsychiatrist and author of numerous texts on child behavior. He was participating in a question and answer session at the conference of the International Council for Exceptional Children. "They won't let you teach until you have had a good education." he remarked, "hut you can have children with not a day of education."
