I ing thia year to put oat a good baseball team. In a meeting held last week Cleo Smoot was named manager. Bob Adams, owner of the Drive-tin Theatre, will be the team's sponsor and games will be played on a field near his place. The Purlear-Millers Creek club has plenty of too well experienced talent but needs to ibreak some boys into the lineup. There are plenty of players around Moravian F*alls, Pores Knob and Boomer. There should be a team for the Wilkesboros this year—maybe two of them. Roaring River, Clingman and Mountain View have boys wanting to play baseball, and ditto for Mount Pleasant and Traphill. Some of the adults should act as sponsors and give the tboys an opportunity to play. BASKETBALL, BOWS OUT With tournaments now under way basketball bows out of the picture for the season and makes room for baseball or spring football practice. The .South Piedmont Conference, of which North Wilkesboro is a member, frowns on spring football practice because other sports are too much neglected if football gets all the time and boys not on the gridiron don't get much athletic?. There were no championship cage teams in Wilkes this year but practically all of the high schools teams were balanced, played well and the weakest could have beaten the strongest on an off night. In several schools> particularly North Wilkesboro, the outlook is good for next season. NOTES ON FLASHERS, Frank Emerson, the tall left hander that couldn't win much last year but who had the eye of all the Scouts, was in last week from his home in Detroit, talking salary terms Tom Daddino is after a pitcher who won gobs of games in a fast semipro league in New Jersey Jack Leonard popular member of the Flashers team last season, will manage a team in the Boston, Mass., city league this season, so says a letter received by his pal, Louis Floro North Wilkesboro club plans to push promotion night for opening here Monday, May 2, and will give away several valuable prizes. Meanwhile, the sale of season tickets is going forward, with half price for children at $12.50 for the season The grapevine says that Bednarchik, who started at first base for Leaksville last season but who had a leg broken, Is Interested In playing here this year. He Is an outfielder and can hit a long ball Mack Eller, a star among stars on the Millers Creek all star basketball team, looks like a good baseball prospect with his power and speed. Only handicap is lack of experience, and that can be remedied Local players are invited to work out in Spring training with the other Flasher candidates. EXCITING FINISH Sparta and White Plains girls staged an exciting finish game for the Tadkin -Valley tournament at Elkin. Sparta trailed all the way until a crip shot by Mitchell at the final gun pat them ahead 18 to 17 and gave them the four-county championship. Yadkinrille boys had no trouble with Franklin . . Traphill boyB was the only Wilkes team surviving the elimination among boys. Jean McNeill of Millers Creek, made the girls' all-conference squad. Mitchell and Black, of Sparta girls, were also on the Highlands Conference selections. They may have a collection of gold /basketballs if they play in more tournaments. o Marriage License License to wed were issued during the past week by Register of Deeds Troy C. Foster to three couples: Bob Baldwin, Roaring River, and Betty Pierce Wilkesboro; James R. Pendry and Ann Cleary, bot hof Hays; Clint Harrold, Hays, and Patty Lee Brewer, North Wilkesboro. Dads, Grandpas Will Play Youth ' In Game Friday On Friday March 11, the fathers and grandfathers of the Millers Creek boy's basketball team will try to call back from 20 to 55 years in order to give their offsprings a licking in a basket ball game to be played on the local court Friday night. This father and • son game promises to be main attraction of the season with dads boasting the ability to give the young yearlings a licking one was as another. There will i>e a vanity of uniforms seen on the local court, for any kind of a uniform will be used from regulation basketball pants to long handle underwear and dresses. The gate receipts will be used to help pfty for the football equipment which has been on order for sometime. The price of admission will be 25 and 50 cents) and as many as can are urged to attend—have a good time and help support your school and team. Since most of the people in the county are familiar with the local high school team only the line up of the Dads and Grandfathers will be given: John Yannoy, Wilkes Hardware Co.; Don Snider, Wilkes Hosiery Mill; Paul Delp, Church and Delp; Ed Pierce, Wilkes Furniture Ex change; Grant Whittington, | Brook's Motor Service; Tom Wake layes, Hayes Hardware; Rom C! lurch, Church and Delp; Claude Brooks, filler's Lumber & Suppliet; Van Caudlll, Millers Creek High School; Sam Osborne, 1 [tilers Creek Hlgji School; date 3umgarner, Unattached; Howard Kllby, T.
