C. | SPORTS BRIEFS MIRACLE BOYS Traphill high school boys bas ketball team is one of the most unusual sports organizations in western North Carolina, and we don't 'know of one which deserves more credit for its accomplish ments. Traphill is the smallest of the county high schools in Wilkes. The students enrollment is small est, and it has the smallest plant of any schools which participate in inter-scholastic basketball. Of more effect on the sports program is the fact that Trap hill has no gymnasium and the only home practice has been on dirt courts, another signi ficant fact is that all games were played away because Traphill has no gymnasium. Yet this small group of boys this year amassed an enviable record and with possibly one ex ception defeated all boys teams in the county at least once. This team went to the Yad kin Valley tournament at Elkin and were eliminated on a bad night after winning one game. That was a blow to the boys from Traphill because they had their minds set on winning that four-county tournament. By no means dismayed, the Traphill boys entered the Jour nal-Sentinel northwest tourna ment in Winston-Salem, reputed to be the world's largest. Their first opponents were Yadkinville boys, Yadkin valley four-county champions and rated highly in the northwest cage meet. But when the final whistle sounded Traphill had won the game, thanks to a scrappy bunch of youngsters who believe that the bigger they are the harder they fall. The very next night Traphill was pitted against Elkin, which has one of the ibetter boys teams in this part of the stae, but two nights in a row were too much against strong teams. Much credit for the Traphill success goes to Eldred Billings, center on the team and who handled the team on the court. NOTICE OF RE-SALE OF LAND AND PERSONAL PDOPERTY. North Carolina, Wilkes County. Harp Is faculty advisor for the team but -would be the first to tell you that the credit goes to the boys themselves.Eld red ifl ft* '®et and one inch tall. Hie is a farm boy and his father is McKinley Billings, of the Lo rn ax community. Eldred will graduate this year and he wants to go on to oollege and educate himself to be a basketball coach He has the ability and the quali ties for leadership, as evidenced by the record of the team he directs. Eldred's greatest handi cap to future plans is finances, but some college basketball coach would be doing a good day's work to hand him a scnoiarsfcip with some aid for board and room on the side. Of course Eldred is not the en tire team, but he is their leader and their coach, as far as play is concerned. No one of the other boys is outstanding but they play well as a team. We sineerely hope that the people of the Traphlll commun ity will have early success for their movement to erect a school gymnasium, and that they will have an athletic field for out door sports. millers creek boys— While passing out cage laur els, possibly for the last time this season, we would not fail to mention that Millers Creek boys defeated Union Grove 36 to 32 in an overtime game in' the northwest tournament and provided one of the most thrilling games there for the big cage meet. The Millers Creek boys are well coached and play well to gether.
