Washington 6, D. C.
The next of kin of deceased
members of the division who
served during the specified period
may also obtain a copy. In addi
tion, offlcem and men who served
in non-divisional units attached
to the Srd Marine Division dur
ing any of its campaigns may
secure copies of the history on
request until the supply is ex
hausted.
In order to receive one of the
2400,copies yet to be distributed,
persons entitled to the publica
tion are urged to include in their
letters, name *nd present ad
dress, unit with which they serv
ed in tne 3rd Marine Division,
and the period during which they
served.

community service center which
now operates a library, sewing
classes, health clinic nursery
school, apd Bible classes for the
city. The center has grown out
of the needs of young women
who formerly attended the Chris
tian school maintained by the
mission.
"The city of Manila Is taking
on a new look," reports Miss
Roxy Lefforge, missionary in that
Philippine Islands city. "We no
longer live in a ghost-community.
The Harris Memorial School has
moved into the newly reconstruc
ted Wilson Hall. Everywhere new
buildings are going up, ruins are
being torn down, and old build
ings are having their faces lifted.
The sea wall is almost whole
again. The streets are being re
paired and beautified. People are
waiting for the first signs of
the 'phoenix' which is expected
to arise from the ashes of the
old Central Student Church."
The Methodist Clinic at Sltia
wan, Perak, Federation of Mal
aya, opened twenty years ago by
Miss Mechteld Dirksen, R. N., of
Mount Vernon, N. Y., and closed
during the years of Japanese con
trol of the territory, has again
been opened. "My first venture
in preventive medicine was to
take over the health examina
tions of 650 children in the An
glo-Chinese School (Methodist
English School)," says Miss Dirk
sen. "Even such superficial ex
aminations showed a great many
defects and deficiencies. Many
were undernourished, and we
supplied them with the food-sup
plement which I brought _ out
from home. The teeth of the
younger children especially were
very bad; about 7 per cent had
defective vision, and a great num
ber have trachoma. The former
are being attended to by an eye
specialist in I poll; the latter we
treat In the Clinic."
The United Council of Church
Women is one of the principal
sponsors of the nationwide rad
io program, "One Great Hour"
which is to be heard over CBS,
ABC, and MBS networks from 10
to 11 p.m. (E. 6. T.), Saturday,
March 26 in promotion of the
church wide simultaneous offer
ing the following day at church
services for Church World Ser
vice and the denominational re
lief agencies which comprise
that body. The radio drama show
ing need for relief and rehabili
tation in Europe and Asia, is
said to be the greatest radio pro
duction of its kind in the history
of that medium of information.
It was written and will be produ
ced by Barnouw. The Sundayof
fering will be taken in 76,000
Protestant churches where the
attendance is estimated at 50,
000,000 persons.
Meeting in national conven
tion in San Francisco, Cal., from
March 7 to 14, the Young Wo
man's Christian Associations of
the United States adopted a pu
blic affairs program that urged
support to legislation to eliminate
discrimination based on sex, co
lor, religion, or race; and gave
support to measures looking to
ward federal aid in education,
low-cost housing t0 rid Ameri
can cities of slums, prohibition
of child labor, strengthening of
fair labor practices, support of
the United Nations, and strength
ening of public health services.
The convention of 2,000 women
represented 3,000,000 YW mem
bers in 1049 branches in the Un
ited States, and other thousands
in 68 countries overseas where
the YW has services.
USA is the name of a well
known industrial town near Fu
kuoka, Japan. The story is that
the town was no named so that
certain manufactured articles
sent from there to America in
the pre-war days could truth
fully bear the label, "Made in
USA." Since the war nothing has

Resolution Calling Primary
At a meeting duly called for the
Board of Elections for Wilkes
County, on motion duly seconded
and carried, it is hereby ordered
that the Primary for the Town
of North Wilkesboro to nominate
Mayor, Members of the Town
Board of Commissioners and
School Trustees for said town be
held on Monday, April 18th, 1949,
and the Election shall be held on
Tuesday, May 3, 1949.
On motion duly seconded and
carried, Montie Handy was ap
pointed Registrar and Glenn Cox
and Joe Godby were appointed
Judges to hold said Municipal Pri
mary and Ejection for the said
Town of North Wilkesboro, and
that said Primary and Election
shall be conducted and carried cm
under and pursuant with the laws
now in force governing Town Pri
maries and Election for the Town
of North Wilkesboro.
It is further ordered that said
Primary and Election be held in
the City Hall, North Wilkesboro,
N. C., only voting place, for the
Town Primary and Election, locat
ed on "B" Street; it is further
ordered that registration books be
kept open for new qualified reg
istrants at City Hall, North Wil
kesboro, on Saturday, March 2f,
1949; Saturday, April 2, 1949;
Saturday, April 9, 1949; and Sat
urday, April 16, 1949 is hereby
designated challenge day; and the
Registrar herein appointed shall
be in the City Hall on the Satur
days heretofore mentioned and
discharge his duties as said Reg
istrar in accordance with the laws
governing registration and chal
lenging of voters.
That all qualified electors desir
ing to vote in the Municipal Pri
mary and Election for the Town
1 of North Wilkesboro, unless al
ready registered for Town Elec
tions, shall register at the place
above designated on or before Sat
urday, April 9, 1949.

M. Teague, of Cincinnati, Ohio,
Methodist missionary in Futuoka,
reported that a Buddhist priest
and some 400 of his temple de
votees have become Christian. It
seems that they have been study
ing the Bible and Christian doc
trine together for some months
and just recently hare declared
themselves as Christians. Now the
temple is being converted into a
Christian church.
