208 to 207 to send the riddled
legislation back to the Veterans
Committee for "further study."
That group, headed iby the fiery
Mississippi Democrat, possibly
might try to redraft a veterans
aid bill for later consideration,
but Rankin, himself, indicated no
such effort was in prospect.
"That kills this legislation for
this Congress," he said.

And as he stalked, red faced
from the chamber, Rankin told a
reporter:
"They were organised against
us and ran over us."

Held By Grange
Odell Whittington, master of
Reddles River Grange, announced
at the last meeting a nation
wide essay contest on "Conserva
tion of our Soil Resources," to
be conducted by the National
Grange and American Plant Food
Council, beginning March 15 and
extending through June 15.
State and National prizes to
taling $15,000 for young men
and women through 20 years of
age will be awarded.
"The contest," Mr. Whitting
ton said, ''is open to any young
man or woman, regardless of
Grange membership, who will'not
be mpre than 20 on June 15. All

American Plant Food Council:
National—first prize, a 1949
Buick Super 4-door sedan auto
mobile; second prize, a Chevrolet
4-door sedan; third prize, $750
in cash; and fourth prize, $250 in
cash.

cash; sceond, $75; and third, $50
Contest Explained
Mr. Whittington explained that
each entrant's treatment of con
servation principles "may be
based on information from text
books, bulletins, motion pictures,
interviews or personal experience1
but practical application of the
subject to the land in the com-1
munity, state or nation will be
given special consideration in the
judging of each paper".
Entries must not exceed 800
words and will be judged on the
basis of 55 points for effective
ness, 20 points for originality,
15 for practical application of
subject matter, and 10 for
grammatical correctness.

r Thirty years ago the 15th-17th

1 of World War I soldiers, sailors,
' and marines was held in Paris,
1 France, to form on organisation
' to preserve in memory and rec
' ards the incidents of the war Just
' terminated and for the promulga
' ton of lawB beneficial to men
' who suffered disability while in
' service.
This meeting resulted in The
American Legion, the organisa
; tion of which was completed in
St. Louis, Mo. in May, 1919. Na
tonal and state headquarters
were setup and the local posts or
ganized. It is not a 'Secret Order'
and neither is it a partisan poli
tical outfit.
Purposeful, serious, steadfast
men joined, with the aim to help
secure from the government ben
efits for the Veterans; adequate
hospitals and treatment for the
wounded and diseased men re
turning from service and to com
pensate these men for their loss
of earning ability with monetary
benefits, as well.

men and women, and tbose now
In service who served from De
cember 7, 1941, to September 8,
1945, are eligible (or member
ship in The American Legion and
are cordially invited to join.
