#w"' Legion To Give Four Scholarships Raleigh, April 9j—Four schol arshipa of $250.00 each will be a warded by the North Carolina Department of The Amerieai Legion for the year 1949-50, \1 waa announced by Legion Depart ment headquarters today. The scholarships Are open t« any son or daughter of deceased Legionnaires of either Work War 1 or World War II, actuall: in need of financial assistance t< continue his education after fin ishlng high school. The canse 01 the parents death is not a factoi in determining eliibilty for theei scholarships but the deceasec parent must have been a mem ber of an American Legion Posi in North Carolina sometime dur ing his lifetime. There is no special type of ap plication to file for one of thew scholarships, but applicant must be endorsed 'by the local pojsl and must submit a statement from some person in' the com munity showing that the appli cant is a person of character ability and ambition. Deadline for the filing of re quests for one of these scholar ships is midnight June 30, 1949 and all requests should be com pleted and mailed in plenty ol time to reach State Amerieai Legion headquarters, Box 2609 Raleigh, before thai date. Furth er information may be obtainec by contacting the local Amerieai Legion Post. . o — Fiddlers' Convention Union Grove 16tfc Union Grove school will cele brate the Silver Anniversary o: its Old Time Fiddlers' Conven tion on Easter Saturday night April 16 th. This year the Union Grovi Fiddlers' Convention. celebrate: its silver anniversary.For twenty five consecutive Easter Saturday nights throngs of people from fai and nesj- have been gathering a Union Grove to enjdy the ol< time music. Last year was th< biggest ever. Over thirty bandi participated, and over 1000 peo pie were present for the gala oc casion. Mr. H. P. Van Hoy, t veteran fiddler himself, has ibeer manager of the convention slnc< Its beginning. He is an expert ii this field and is in demand th< country over for holding conven tions of this . kind. Only instru mental bands participate. Th< fiddlers this year will entertain' In three convention halls. Eefeh hall will be equipped with load1 speakers and comfortable seating arrangements. The musicians ro tate from hall to ball so that ev ery body can see and hear the same program. The feature pro gram will •'begin at eight o'clock p. m. Union Grove school is located I on highway 901, twenty miles | north of Statesville. © American Legion Will Assist In Filing Claims Each Post of the Legion has a service officer who will gladly assist, free of charge, Comrades in filing claims, for the benefits for which they wish to tfpply, provide by law, such as pensions, on Job training, hospitalisation etc. "The Legion sponsored and urged congress to pass many of the laws now (benefitting veter ans and widows and orphans of men who were killed or died in service and of men who have died since discharge. The American Legion is urg ing the congress to provide more i hospitals for us, two In North1 Carolina, and we ileed them. Many comrades have to wait weeks to get a bed in a Veter ans Hospital. Your help is need ed. iln numbers there is strength. The dues for membership in Wilkes County Post No. 125 American Legion is only three dollars per year and a good monthly magazine is included in that fee. Honorably discharged men and women who served in the United States armed forces between 6 April' 1917 and 11 November 1918 and between 7 December, 1941 and 3 September, 1945, are cordially invited to Join the American Legion. More than one and a half mil lian farm residents took enforced vacations last year because of accidents. One out of every 17 farm people suffered a disabling mishap during the year.
