Wilkes County, In the third quarter of 1948, had 3,943 cov ered workers employed, a loss of 5.62 per cent from the second quarter. They received quarterly wages of $1,558,037, an average weekly wage of $30.39. s o — Melon Is Flown To Child Sick With Paralysis North Robinson, O., April 18. — Maxine Rudd, 11-year-olr1 paralysis victim, got today the watermelon she wanted for Easi er. The Red Cross, a kindly physi cian, two airlines, a radio station and a newspaper co-operated in making the child's wish come true. The melon arrived by plane from Miami, Fla. last night, and was picked up in Columbus by Scott McMurray, a reporter for The Marion, O., Star. He deliver ed it to Maxine in this Crawford county community today. Maxine's first words when she saw the melon were. "It's mine." Then she said: 'I'm going to hold on to it with both hands.' Sfie ate a large portion — the most she had eaten of anything for a week, her mother said. East Main Street Narth Wilkesboro In Again, Out Again; In Again, Out Again Graham, April 18.—Aibe Haw kins, operator of Falnrlew Serv ice Station on Highway 70, was arrested, released under bond and arrested again on a second charge In less than four hours Saturday afternoon, according to the local sheriff's department. Officers report that they raid ed the service station at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon and found tnree quarts, one pint, and a small amount of whisky In two open bottles. I Hawkins >was arrested, charged with illegal possession for th4 purpose of sale, and released un der $500 bond. About 6 o'clock a second raid • I |>od the service station yielded four pints and three quarts of whisky, according to officers, and Hawkins was arrested again. Bond was again set at $600.
