WILDLIFE COMMISSION SETS hunting dates and limits Raleigh, May 9.'—Tentative seasons and bag limits lor hunting next Pall and Winter were adopted by the Wildlife Resources Commission today. The commission decided to hold open hearings in each of the wildlife divisions on the proposed Beasona and bag limits. After the nine hearings are held, the commission will inake its final decisions on the hunting regulations. The hearings will be held in courthouse at 10 a. m. on the following dates: District One. June 10, Edenton; Two, June 9, New Bern; Three, June 8, Rocky Mount; Fourth, June 7, Ellzabethtown; Fifth, June 6, Burlington; Sixth, June 3, Albemarle; Seventh, June 2, Yadkin▼llle; Eighth, June 1, Marlon, Ninth, May 31, Sylva. The proposed hunting seasons and bag limits: Bear—October 15 to January 2'; bag limit two daily, two in possession and two a season, except one a day, two in possession and two a season in and west of Alleghany, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke and Rutherford Counties. Deer, Western counties—In Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania the season shall be November 15 to December 5, except as follows: No open season in Buncombe county in the area southeast of Ashevllle bound on the North by U. S. 70 and on the West by U. S. 25, Henderson County Easi of U- J3. 25- Haywood County North of IT. S. 19 and 23; in Avery, Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey, no open season in area south of U. S. 64-70, open season in remaining portions of counties, November 14, 15, 16, and December 5, 6 and 7; in Macon and Clay Counties and that portion of Cherokee East of U. S. 19, November 14, 15 and 16 and' December 5, 6, and 7. Bag limit, in East, one daily, two in possession and two a season; in West, one daily, one in possession and one per season. * Opossum and raccoon (with gun and dogs)—October 15-February 15, except in and west of Alleghany, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke and Rutherford, November 1-February 15; Bag limit, no limit except in and west of Alleghany, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke and Rutherford the bag limit for coon shall be one per day and no limit for number in possession and number per season. Rabbits—November 2 4-January 31; Bag limit seven daily, 14 in possession and no limit for season. Squirrel—October 15-January 2; Bag limit eight daily, 16 in possession and 100 for season which may include one fox squirrel per day, two in possession and 10 per season; in and west of Alleghany, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke, and Rutherford, season October 1-December 15: Bag limit, six daily, 12 in possession and 75 per season with no open season for fox squirrels. Quail—November 2 4-January 31, except in Cherokee, Graham, £>wain, Clay, Macon, Jackson, 1 ransylvnaia, Haywood, Madison, Bancombe, Henderson, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery,1 Watauga, Ashe and Alleghany, November 24-January 2, bag limit eight dally, 16 in possession, and 100 per season. Raffed grouse-—November 24January 2, except in and west of Madison, Buncombe and Henderson, October 16-January 2, bag limit two daily, four in possession and 20 pec season. t Pox—May be tal^en with guns when the season is open for any other game birds or animals except where local laws regulate the fox season. Trapping of mink, muskrat, opossum, and raccoon—December 15-February 28, except in and south of Hoke, Harnett, Sampson, Wayne, Lenoir, Craven and Pamlico, January 1-February 28, and Ashe and Alleghany where the muskrat season will be November 1-February 28. Daniels Rejects Job As The Navy Boss Washington, May 9.—Jonathan Daniels, editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, has informed President Truman *hat he cannot accept appointment as secretary of the navy because of business commitments, It was disclosed today. C.—5-19-4t (T) Three In Wilkes Face Liquor Still Charges Greensboro. — Three Wilkes County men have been arrested on charges of operating unregistered stills and have posted $500 bonds for their appearance at the May term of Federal Court at Wilkesboro. The office of U. S4 Marshall William D. Kizziah announced yesterday that those arrested were iHayden Ferguson and William C. Price, both of Pores Knob and Canned Davis of Roaring River, Route 2. Marshal Kixzlah's office also announced that William Carroll Haire of Wilkes County has been fined $25 by TJ. S.
