While not a plant food, organic matter decays and disappears through natural ■oil processes, and it must be constantly replaced through the return of clover, manure, straw and stalks. Lack of org%pic mat-' ter will hold down yields even though yon apply all the lime stone, phosphate, and potash Meded. Soils that are low in org^pic matter are tough and heavy; they pack and run together and are cloddy when broken up. Because of their poor tilth, such soils are not able to take up ^nd store wat er for use by crops during dry spells. They also drain slowly and erode more easily than soils that are well supplied^ with organic matter. Tou can * supply organic • matter by growing legumes and returning manure, straw, and cornstalks at the land. In orchards growing a good permanent coyer crop such as ladlno clover, will help to In dino clover can be seeded In Au crease the organic matter. La gust or early next spring. Lime and phosphate should be worked Into the soil before the clover la seeded. Be sure to Inoculate the! seed. o Machinery For s Sale lers' UD-14 Internation Diesel Pow er Unit with pulley. World production of rice has climbed back to just about what It averaged before World War II. 1 Social Seevrity Veterans Benefits Social Security protection was siren to veterans of this war by legislation which the President signed on August 10, 1946. If a veteran served 90 days or more during the war, and was honorably discharged, he is con orably discharged, he is consid sldered to be "fully insured'' und er the Social Security Act/ if he lies within three years after his discharge. ' Payments will be calculated as though' the veteran had an aver age monthly wage of 1180. This actually works out to something over $56 a month If the veteran leaves a widow and two children. This applies to all veterans who qualify, even If they have never worked under social secur ity. There is one exception. Since this special payment is based on military service, no payment will be made under this new part of the Soelal Security Act if the vet eran'# dependents get a veteran's pension from the Veterans Ad ministration, since snch pay- g mente are also based on military service.
