THE JOURNAL-PATRIOT SPORTS Dwight Nichols, Sports Editor FLASHERS KNOCK GRANITEERS OFF TOP WITH DOUBLE VICTORY North Wilkesboro Flashers set new batting records for Memorial Park here in Memorial Day's double header when they took two games from Mt. Airy and knocked the Graniteers off the top rung in the league. North Wilkesboro took the first game 6 to 5 and blasted out "23 hits for a 20 to 3 victory in the nightcap, which was featur ed by homers by Doug Shores and Arnold Davis. Worth Cuthbertsoh hurled the • first game and allowed only one earned run. It was the Flashers' worst game afield this yea# as they committed five errors. The game went through ten innings and was broken up when Nixon walked home the winning run. " The Flashers in the second game opened up on Solters witn four straight hits and two runs in the first frame. Mr. Airy tied the count in the second on one hit and two errors. WiDkelspect tripled home two runs in the third. Davis led off in the fourtn and drove the first strike into the third row of centerfield bleachers. Siceloff tripled. In the big fifth Winkelspect and Stanley singled and Doug Shores slammed a Solters pitch over centerfield fence in right center over the bleachers. Essie went in to pitch and Daddino greeted him with a triple. Thirteen batters "went/up in the inning and Shores got the last hit, a booming triple to right. Pour more runs were picked up in the seventh and eighth, when Shores got a double to complete the cycle of single, double, triple and homer in one game. Three Homers Beit Mount Airy 8 To 7 Doug Shores blasted two hom ers and Pat Pefccitelli one round tripper to best Mount Aify in ten innings 8 to 7 at Mount Airy Tuesday night. Shores' second blow was in the tenth and was good for three runs and the ball game. Pescitelli drove _in three runs and Shores a total of four. Leslie Rhoades went the route for North Wilkesboro. The game was tied up in the bottom of the ninth by Essie's homer.
