By Dunn and Cftiipnutn Millard Brown, whose farm is located near Hays, is using ter races and contour strip farming to control erosion and keep up yields. Despite the rainy weather, Roby Rhodes, of the Hay Meadow community, has saved a good crop of alfalfa this spring. Mr. Rhodes seeded the alfalfa last fall and is expecting several more crops during the summer. Wade Walker, has constructed approximately one mile of ter races on his farm located west of Cycle. Mr. Walker used a farm tractor and disc plows to con struct the terraces. Van Wiles built approximate ly! 1-2 mile of terraces on his father's Sid Wiles)' farm located near Fishing Creek Church. Van used a farm tractor with farm plows to do the job. On Friday, May 27, the Soil Cpnservation Service delivered ydung bass for the fish ponds of Mjr. Perry Lowe, of the Brushy Mountain community, D. A. Hol leman of <Somers community, Dwight Barker, who lives on the Little Mountain Road near Aus tin, and two ponds in the Cling ir an community, one belonging t< D. J. Redding and one to Har r] ■ Greene and Carl Mathis. These ponds were stocked with bream last fall and should afford some gfood fishing next year. I About three years ago, th • Wilkes County work unit of the' Tri-Creek Soil Conservation Dis trict helped Mr. Ambrose John s' in of Hays, N. C. to underplant boundary of hardwood with hite pine seedlings. The young nes are now growing beautiful ly and will be ready^to take over When the hardwood is taken off. The personnel of the Tri-Creek Soil Conservation District recent ly assisted Ronzie Harrold of the Hay Meadow community, to stake terrace lines on a pasture field. Mr. Harrold hfc limed part of this pasture and plans to use lime and phosphate and some balanced fertilizer this fall to maintain a good pasture on this land. ■ o Support Y. M.
