HE tradir P.-T. A. Given The Ferguson Parent-Teacher Association was organised in No vember 1935. Mr. M. C. Dixon was principal of the school. Mr. | W. A. Profflt was elected first I president of the P.-T. A-. and' he held that office for two yeari. Those early years of the P.-T. A. | wei"e trying ones. The old schooi building had burned down, and the present one completed la February 1934. Securing cur tains for the atage was one of the first projects of the P.-T. A., then a piano was purchased, elec tric light fixtures were installed in some of the classrooms by the Duke Power Company, and some books were purchased and addod to the library. In 1936 Mr. G. B. Tester be came principal of the school. In -1937 Mr. T. W. Ferguson was elected president of the P.-T. A. Shrubbery was set around the school building and a cable was put around to protect the shrub bery. In that year the lunch pro gram was organized, with Mrs. Walter Davis head cook. The price of each lunch was .05 cents. In 1938! Mrs. S. F. Miller was elected president of the P. T. A. An Encyclopedia was purchased for the school, and improvements were made on the school ground. In 1939 Mrs. T. W. Ferguson was elected president of the P.-T. A., additional shrubbery was set out and a cement walk was com pleted. In 1940 Mr. S. P. Miller was| elected president of the P.-T. A. Laboratory equipment was pur chased for courses in Biology and Chemistry, improvements on the driveways were made, and a flag pble erected. In that year Mr. J). C. Redmond became principal, serving until Christmas, then Mr. Mack O. Proffit became princip al and served until 1944. During the school year 1940 and 1941 a! basement for storing food was started, and guttering was put up around the school building. In 1941 Mr. S. F. Miller was unan imously re-elected president of the P.-T. A., with Mrs. T. W. Ferguson vice president. In that j year the school had the largest school garden in Wilkes county. A canning program headed * by Mrs. E)va McNeil canned 1800 quarts of foods, 135 bushels of beans were grown. In 1942 Mr. L. F. Walsh was elected president of the P.-T. A. and Mr. E. R. Settle was elected vice president. It was in that year that the P.-T. A. began planning sanitary toilets. A kitchen sink was installed. The P.-T. A. had dreamed about a playground, finally in 1942 5.2 acres of land was purchased from Mr. Roby Bishop to enlarge the playground to what it now is. In 1943 Mr. L. F. Walsh was re-elected president of the P.-T. A. and Mrs. S. F. Miller vice president. Seats were secured for the auditorium, and a filing cab inet purchased for the office. In 1944 Mr. L. C. ^Hollar became principal and Mr. G. G. Hayes was elected president of the P. T. A. The basement was complet ed with brick furnished by Mr. Mitch Shepherd. A large Majes tic Cooking Unit was purchased and installed in March 1946. 100 soup bowls, plates, cups and saucers were purchased. Two hogs were butchered and stored in the freezer locker at States ville by Mr. Hollar for later use in the school lunch room. In 1946 Mr. D. C. Redmond became principal. Mr. C. E. Johnson was elected president of the P.-T. A. The price of the school lunch was raised to .15 cents that year. 180 compart ment plates, 10 or 12 dozen forks and Spoons, some pots, pans and othe$ cooking utensils were purchased. November 15, 1946 the Home Demonstration club gave $25.00 to start a fund to build a gymnasium. "A Gym Club" was organized with Mr. Mitch Shepherd president and Mr. L. F. Walsh secretary and treasurer. Something over $2, 000,00 is now in this fund. By March 18, 1947 a 100 foot well drilled by R. E. Faw and Sons had been completed, and a mod ern water system installed. Two typewriters were purchased. It was announced that year that the school had been made a four year high school. A large refrig erator was purchased for the lunch room that year. In 1947 Mr. M- R. Ingram be-J I came principal. Mr. G. EL John son was re-elected president of the P.-T. A. A central heating system and indoor toilets were Installed In 1M7-49. Two ne classrooms were added and a kitchen built. The kitchen was paid for by the P.-T. A. Light fix tures were installed in the other rooms, so that now all rooms are lighted. In 1948 Mr. M. A. Cowles be came principal and Mr. C. G. Williams was elected president of the P.-T. A. with Mr. L. F.' Walsh, secretary and treasurer. Improvements have been made on the school ground including posts set along facing the road to protect the newly set rose bushps and shrubbery. The out doer toilets have been removed and the ground leveled with a bulldozer. Cinders have been placed on the grounds to keep the mud dbwn near the bus parkings. A motion was made and carried to sow grass on the school lawn. A number of sup plementary readers have been added, and eleven full length mirrors have been added. Bars have been placed over the lunch room windows. $137.00 worth of Wear Ever Cooking Utensils have been added to the lunch room, also tables and shelves have been covered with linoleum. A cot and linen have been donat ed by P.-T. A. members for First Aid equipment. 28 blackout shades have been installed over j the windows in the auditorium, so that a movie may be shown] at any time. The same officers have been re-elected by acclama tion for the school year 1949-'50. The total membership of the Fer guson P.-T. A. to date is 52 mem bers.—Reported by Ben S.
