jae-tyin Police mw Captures Liquor li Chase Walnut Cove. — Lucio Hill, ralnut Core's part-time and le-man police force, had a nar >w escape from death In the ee hours of Sunday morning hen he brushed up against hat is believed to be a large uig of liquor runners who *re moved into Stokes County •om Virginia. Officer Hill was .aklng his nightly rounds of this Aerwlse peaceful town and had aused at the Intersection of jghways 89 and 311 about 2:30 . m. when he saw a half-ton ■uck run through the stop sign t the Junction. The officer notlc ed that the truck was he&Tily loaded and proceeding at an ex cessive rate of speed and he pur sued the vehicle in a wild chase through town. Officer Hill used his red police light and siren but the operator of the truck, instead of stopping, tried to ram the police car as it drew abreast of the fleeing ve hicle. Coming down grade and making 60 to 70 miles an hour, the track tried unsuccessfully to force the police car up onto the sidewalk. Once out on the open and narrow highway the chase went careening toward Winston Salem. Officer Hill pulled a breast of the truck and tried to force it to the side and the driv er In turn rammed him in the rear fender forcing him off the road. The truck then turned right on highway 311. The policeman finally forced the truck driver to turn onto a dirt road near Albertus Hens dale's farm and to abandon his truck while it was still rolling and take to the woods on foot. The truck finally stalled on a hill and it was there that Officer Hill confiscated the largest load of white liquor taken in the town of Walnut Cove in a decade. . A check with a night sandwich shop revealed that a young man and a girl riding in a maroon convertible had inquired about the highway patrol and on hear ing the scream of the siren l«ft in haste after seeing the chase. The man said: "That's bad. Sorry to lose even this little one." It is believed that the advance car was sent out to check on the road and to advise the truck of highway patrolmen but failed to identify the town policeman's car. Mayor Elkln Smith of Walnut Cove ordered the 190 gallons of illegal liquor poured down the drain and held the truck in custody. The mayor signed a re ceipt for one half gallon of the liquid which he intends to send to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine for chemical analysis. "I think that it would be benefical to let the people know how potent this stuff is," said the mayor. "Maybe they will oe wise enough to quit drinking this poison." BETTER HOMES FURNITURE CO.
