Airy, In a near perfect slab duel here Tues day night, with Mount Airy win ning 1-0 in the ninth inning. It was the best pitched game of the season in Memorial Park and kept fans on the edge of their seats through all nine innings. With three key players ab sent, North Wilkesboro had four pitchers in the lineup, including Bernle Keating on first, Dick Long on second, and Ralph Cun ningham in right field. Neither team had touched the hit column until the bottom of the third, when with two out Long singled between first and second. In the fourth Dub Akins singled for Mt. Airy and got as far as second base. In the fourth Doug Shores singled and went to third when the ball bounded past Holt in right field. Shores tried to-score on Cooper's out to shortstop and was called out at the plate on a disputed decision by Umpire Jay. With a lone hit until the ninth, Mt. Airy produced scoring punch in the final frame with two extra base blows.. With one out Hope singled. Postove struck out Mills but Kairis drove the first strike into right center for a triple. In the bottom half of the ninth the Flashers threat ened when Shores walked, bnt was tagged out in oyersliding second on a steal. Both PostoTe and Flowers were extremely effective. Flow ers had ten strikeouts to six for Postove but the newly acquired Flasher pitcher had the edge on number of hits allowed, 4 to 3 Both walked four each. North Wilkesboro had three stolen bases, with two runners caught stealing, and Mt. Airy had two stolen bases. Bob Hite made his debut as catcher for North Wilkesboro, with Davis playing a good game In center field and Cooper mak ing an outstanding catch in left. Hite is six feet tall, weighs 190. bats left and throws right. His home is in Greenburg, Pa. He is a rookie, but had played this season at Fargo, N. D., in the Northern League and at Kinston, N. C., in the Coastal Plain cir cuit. Drop Two To Elkin North Wilkesboro's patched up lineup dropped two games to the surging Blanketeers at Elkin Monday night. The first game was a runaway 16 to 1 as Elkin batters went on a nuung at the expense of Frank Fazio. Red Powers was Elkin's hurler and allowed only three hits. The Flashers jumped Into a 3-0 lead against Roy Doles In the second game «but errors aid ed in Elkin's rally to come back in the third with three runs to go ahead and on to win 6-2. Ralph Cunningham pitched a good game for the Flashers, who had three pitchers in the lineup and Catcher Roy Sanders in th« outfield. Arnold* Davis scored one of the Flasher runs on a wild pitch after smashing a triple off Doles, and the second was scor ed by Peters, who stole home in a double steal with Pescitelli taking second. Spartanburg Man Held For Evasion Of The Draft Rochester, N. Y.—Wyatt A. Cooper, 41, of Spartanburg, S. C., was arrested today by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on a charge of draft evasion. Harry G. Maynor, FBI agent for the Buffalo district, said Cooper failed to report for in duction at Spartanburg Nov. 26, 1943. A South Carolina Federal grand jury indicted Cooper Sept. 8, 1948, on a charge of violat-, ing the selective service code. Bttna Tb*t Book to Om Iltatri Good Ball Games In Wilkes League Walsh Lumber company base ball team defeated Moravian Falls 14 to 1 in a Wilkes county league game played Monday night In Memorial Park. > Although the score was lop sided, play compared favorably between the two teams, except for a number of passed balls which ran up the Walsh team's score. Kenneth Da?ls, pitching for Walsh's held Moravian Falls to two hits. Land was the receiver. Efreid Gwaltney and Barnette formed the Moravian Falls bat tery. The score Dy innings: R. H. E. Twins Scalded By Baby Sitter Hammond, Indj—A 14-year old baby sitter was accused to day of putting a set of twins in bath water so hot that 18-month old Carol Gora died. The baby girl's brother, Ro bert, was in critical condition in St. Margaret's Hospital as a re sult of the scalding last Thurs day night. Police started an investigation when the girl died yesterday but refused to say whether the un named baby sitter will be turned over to juvenile authorities. Man, 25, Is Married On Operating Table Ashland, Pa.—A 25-year-old Glrardville, Pa., man was mar ried yesterday as he lay on the operating table at Ashland State Hospital. That was the day* originally set for Arthur Engle's wedding and he insisted on going through with it despite serious knife wounds in his chest, leg and arms. The bride was Mary Hark away 23, of Mahanoy Plane, l*a. Police said Engle was wound ed Saturday in a fight with a friend. Hospital officials turned over the operating room for the wed ding "because it's the quietest place in the building."
