THE JOURNAL-PATRIOT SPORTS Dwight Nichols, Sports Editor Flashers Eke Oat Split With Elkin Longest Came Of Season Goes To North Wilkes boro 6-5 Tuesday At 11:27 Tuesday night a wild throw ended the baseball luarathon between North Wil kesboro and Elkin here as North Wilkesboro won the elongated contest 6 to 5. It was one of those see-saw games that delight fans and was finally decided on a break. Elkin scored in the top of the third and North Wilkesboro knotted the count in the same inning. Ralph Cunningham and Jerry Marquis locked in a pitchers' bat tle until the~ seventh, when Elkin scored two and North Wilkesboro came back with three and added another for good measure in the eighth to go ahead by two runs. In the ninth a base on balls, NOTCE! NOTICE! The Wilkes County Board of Education will receive sealed bids for the unloading of coal until 10 A. M. Monday, July 25, 1949. The game should have been won in the eighth, when Pescitelli was called out on a wide pitch, with the bases loaded. The game set a record for time this season, consuming three hours and 27 minutes. There were frequent, but brief, argu ments with the umpires. Blan keteer Manager Tige Harris was ejected for vigorous protests in the sixth. Elkin Wins 1-0 Elkin Blanketeers defeated the Flashers 1 to 0 at Elkin Monday night in one of the best pitched games of the season in the circuit. Bernie Keating pitch ed a masterful game for North Wilkesboro, and allowed only two hits. The Flashers got to Mostak for eight hijs but were woefully lacking 1 n scoring punch, leaving eight stranded to only one for Elkin. There were no bases on balls in the game. With exception of Bishop, who doubled and scored on a series of breaks, Elkin didn't get past first base. Elkin's first hit was by Bishop, who lined one over Cooper's head in left field. Bishop stretch ed the double, going to third base safely when Shores dropped the ball with Bishop oat by two steps. Keating fanned the next batter and got the second out on a pop-up on an attempted squeeie. A pitch in the dirt got by Davis and Bishop scored. The Flashers threatened to score in four innings but Mos tak was equal to the occasion when a runner was on second. Long led in hitting with a dou ble and two singles. The Kids collected only two hits, singles by Church and Dow-' ell, off Pierce, Millers Creek , (hurler, bnt they made them | count with errors and walks for I six runs. R. Bnglebert got three hits for Millers Creek to Jsad both teams at the plate. Millers Creek had a runner on third base with two out and the score tied In the last Inning.
