Representative Doufhton of North Carolina made the an nouncement. The Veterans Administration acquired 411 acres of land In Salisbury, In March, 1945. Selection of the site was made after Administrator Carl Gray, Jr., personally Inspected sites at Winston - Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte, Salisbury, and in the neighborhood of Dnrham. His observations supplemented prev iously made engineering surreys. Gray said that all the sites were so well adapted that he could not make a decision on the basis of mere personal observa tion. After he returned to Wash ington, Gray said a mathematical formula was devised by which sites would be compared with locating a hospital weighed. In each element of Importance In that way, selection was made on a strictly mathematical basis. Gray said the use of the formula was so successful that It would be used In all future selections. Gray said that the Salisbury location was not so favorable as some others from the standpoint of distance from medical schools. However, he said, Salisbury had already spent $304,000 and the federal government $1,030, 000 on the site there, and this more than outweighed the other consideration. Design and supervision of con struction of the hospital will be handled by the Veterans Admin istration construction service. o Sale Of New Cars Increases In State Raleigh.—Sales of new cars in North Carolina continued on the upgrade during June, the State Department of Motor Vehicles announced yesterday. Last month 6,638 automobiles were sold in the State as com pared with 4,011 for June of last year,the department said. Truck sales declined, however, with 1,647 sold this June as a gainst 1,760 last June. Chevrolet topped passenger car sales with a total of 1,931. Plymouth, Ford and Pontiac fol lowed In that order. Mecklenburg County led the list in the larger number of new cars sold, with Guilford, Wake and Forsyth following. June car sales brought totals for the year to 3&.602 and truck sales brought the number for the year to 11,059. Flashers Defeat Statesmen 5 To 4 North Wilkesboro defeated Frank Subb'a team from Wythe ▼ille 5 to 4 here Thursday night in one of those tight ball games for which the Blue Ridge league has become famous in profession al baseball. The Flashers hit the score board in the first inning when Peters singled and was driven home with a double by Winkel spect. The fast shortstop return ed to the game after several weeks absence and took up where he left off, robbing opposing batters of hits and working in fast double plays. North Wilkes boro added two more in the third. Carl Gentry, former Sparta high school ace, started the game for North Wilkesboro and had his fast ball going well until he was wild in the fifth and put on two runners. Bernie Keating came in and before the side was out both runners had scored. A single run in the fourth and an other in the 8th tied the game up and the large crowd settled down for another long session of baseball. Worth Cuthbertson, formerly with North Wilkesboro, pitched for Wytheville and bore down all the way, pitching one of his best games of the year. But he got into trouble in the 11th when he walked Keating, Peters doubled and Cuthbertson passed Pesci telli to fill the sacks. Winkel spect popped out and Manager Daddino drove a ringing single through second to bat in the win ning run. Peters, who had played at shortstop, was in center field. He had three hits, including a double. Big Mike Brelich, who caught for the Statesmen, was the batting star with four hits, including one two-bagger. o As of July 1 the North Caro lina cotton crop for 1949 was estimated at 820,000 acres'—an increase of 12' per cent over the 730,000 acres in cultivation a year ago, and 8.5 per cent more than the 1938-47 acerage of 756,000 acres.
