Will It Established At Salisbury
f Washington, July 19.—A |17,
000,0000 ntfurophychlatrlc Vet
erans Administration hospital for
North Carolina today was award
ed to Salisbury, it will have 1,
000 beds.
Representative Doufhton of
North Carolina made the an
nouncement.
The Veterans Administration
acquired 411 acres of land In
Salisbury, In March, 1945.
Selection of the site was made
after Administrator Carl Gray,
Jr., personally Inspected sites at
Winston - Salem, Greensboro,
Charlotte, Salisbury, and in the
neighborhood of Dnrham. His
observations supplemented prev
iously made engineering surreys.
Gray said that all the sites
were so well adapted that he
could not make a decision on the
basis of mere personal observa
tion. After he returned to Wash
ington, Gray said a mathematical
formula was devised by which
sites would be compared with
locating a hospital weighed. In
each element of Importance In
that way, selection was made on
a strictly mathematical basis.
Gray said the use of the formula
was so successful that It would
be used In all future selections.
Gray said that the Salisbury
location was not so favorable as
some others from the standpoint
of distance from medical schools.
However, he said, Salisbury
had already spent $304,000 and
the federal government $1,030,
000 on the site there, and this
more than outweighed the other
consideration.
Design and supervision of con
struction of the hospital will be
handled by the Veterans Admin
istration construction service.

Flashers Defeat
Statesmen 5 To 4
North Wilkesboro defeated
Frank Subb'a team from Wythe
▼ille 5 to 4 here Thursday night
in one of those tight ball games
for which the Blue Ridge league
has become famous in profession
al baseball.
The Flashers hit the score
board in the first inning when
Peters singled and was driven
home with a double by Winkel
spect. The fast shortstop return
ed to the game after several
weeks absence and took up where
he left off, robbing opposing
batters of hits and working in
fast double plays. North Wilkes
boro added two more in the
third. Carl Gentry, former Sparta
high school ace, started the game
for North Wilkesboro and had
his fast ball going well until he
was wild in the fifth and put on
two runners. Bernie Keating
came in and before the side was
out both runners had scored. A
single run in the fourth and an
other in the 8th tied the game up
and the large crowd settled down
for another long session of
baseball.
Worth Cuthbertson, formerly
with North Wilkesboro, pitched
for Wytheville and bore down all
the way, pitching one of his best
games of the year. But he got
into trouble in the 11th when he
walked Keating, Peters doubled
and Cuthbertson passed Pesci
telli to fill the sacks. Winkel
spect popped out and Manager
Daddino drove a ringing single
through second to bat in the win
ning run.
Peters, who had played at
shortstop, was in center field.
He had three hits, including a
double. Big Mike Brelich, who
caught for the Statesmen, was
the batting star with four hits,
including one two-bagger.
