B STREET ^ TEL. 1M Field Trip Held By Veteran Farmers By CAYCE FRESNKLL An Interesting and education al field trip was conducted on the farm of Don Bumgarner of the Mulberry community, by the Mul berry class of Veteran Farm Farm Trainees, and their in structor, Cayce Presnell, on Sept. 15 th. The first step of the field trip was led off with a discussion on how Don completely re-dressed a steep, gully-eroded, broomsedge field with a beautiful green mea dow-strip of Orchard grass, fes cue and red clover. Materials used for re-dressing this field were: lime, phosphate and some terraces. This field now has a beau tiful growth of Ladino Clover and fescue. This piece of land will pay ten-fold over and above the expense of seeding in good grazing. The third step in the field j trip, included a general discus sion of a large alfalfa field which Don has mowed four times this season. Here a close observation and study was made by the en tire class on the correct method of preparing soil, fertilizing and seeding of alfalfa. The fourth part of the trip was a brief discussion centered around a five acre field of Soy beans. The advantages of certi fied seed and the method of har vesting #as thoroughly discuss ed. The fifth and last part of the field-trip included a discussion of row crops vs grass, the disad vantage of row crops on hill] land and a summary of the im proved farm practices viewed by ] the vets. This field trip was outstand-1 ing from 3 angles. 1st, The im proved farm practices viewed by the vets, have been carried out by an ex-veteran Farm trainee. 2nd- Most of these trainees knew the condition of this farm prior to 1946. 3rd. The actual educa tion received by these veterans from viewing and thoroughly discussing these improved farm practices. Don started these improve ments when he returned from the army in 1946. He carried out many of these improvements dur ing his 26 months training in the Veteran Farm Training Pro gram. ^ Deane Endorses Farm Bureau Work! . Congressman Charles B. Deane said in a statement released this week that "the splendid work of the Farm Bureau in the past should warrant our full support at the present time as it moves forward in an effort to be of even greater service to the people o! North Carolina in the immediate days ahead." The Eighth District Represen tative, in support of the North Carolina Farm Bureau's current state-wide campaign for 80,000 members, said: "It gives me pleasure and I welcome this opportunity to ex press my interest and admiration |or the splendid program of pub lic service and usefulness" of the State Farm Bureau to the farm ers and other citizens of the State. "The officers of the Farm Bu reau in North Carolina are men of outstanding ability, and with a national reputation," the Con gressman said. C. E. Tharpe, President of the Wilkes County Farm Bureau ap pealed to the farmers of Wilkes county to become members of the Farm Bureau Parity for Agriculture Club by joining the organization and securing the memberships of at least nine oth er farmers. During the 1948 state-wide Farm Bureau membership drive, Tharpe said, 1,827 Tar Heel farm men and women were members of the club, thereby dedicating themselves to fight for the parity principle for Agriculture, the goal of Farm Bureau over the years which applies not only to farm prices and income, but country living standards, social conditions and opportunities as well. Intermediate a mounts may be bought, in mul tiples of $500. There are six permanent plans of GI Insurance. They are: or dinary life, 30-pay life, 20-pay life and three endowment plans. A veteran can choose any one or any combination of these six plans, according to Tfhich fits his condition best. As to the final payment, the Veterans Administration will pay the proceeds of the policy in a lump sum, if that la what the veteran wishes. Or he may choose, regular monthly payments to the beneficiary. The payments will be made to whoever the veteran selects, a member of his family or to someone not related, ac cording to his selection.
