Spruill, Wilkes county sanitarian, attended a three-day conference of public health workers held in Greens boro last week. Mr. and Mrs. Oid Wiles, Miss Mae Wiles and Mr. Ray Wiles visited Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wiles in Raleigh during the week-end. Miss Mary Morehouse, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert More house, left Tuesday to enroll fo her senior year at the University of North Carolina. Miss Patsy Canter, who ia in school at Appalachian college in Boone, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Canter. Mr. Vernon Broyhill has re turned to State College in Ra leigh after spending the summer with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Broyhill, at Boomer. Rev. Dean Mlnton has entered the ministerial school of Wake Forest College. He will continue his pastoral work at Moravian Falls Baptist church while in school. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Choplin are now residing in the residence of Dr. R. E. Lewis in Finley Park. The Choplins formerly lived in the apartment of Mrs. R. M. Brame, Sr., on Ninth Street. Mr. Bill Casey, eon of Mrs. A. H. Casey, has resumed his stu dies at Wake Forest College. His sister, Miss Mary Ann Casey, has entered Meredith College at Ra leigh as a member of the fresh man class. Miss Clara Sue Foster, Mr. Fred C. Jones and Mr. Max Ham by, all of Purlear, have entered Appalachian State Teachers Col lege for their second year. Mrs. Claudine Whittington, of Pur lear, hnd Miss Grace Hamby, cf Champion, have entered as fresh men. Mr. Dick underwood has re turned to his studies at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after spending sev eral days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Underwood. Mr. Peter Morehouse is on his way to Harvard University for his sophomore year and is visit ing his grandmother at Provi dence, R. I., en route. Peter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morehouse. Mr. and Mrs. Charlton Nash, of Shelbyville, Ky., visited their niece, Mrs. E. A. Shook and fam ily Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. Nash were enjoying a trip through the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. Mrs. T. P. Cridlebaugh, of Ashland, Ky., is now visiting with relatives in High Point fol lowing a visit here with her sis ter, Mrs. D. L. Crook. Mr. Cridle baugh will come to High Point the first of October to accom pany his wife home. Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Perryman of the Cricket community, Miss Lillian Shores and Mr. B. T. Gambill, of this city, enjoyed a motor trip to the Great Smoky Mountains Sunday and Monday. They spent Sunday night in Gat linburg, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Ritchie and daughter, Linda, have re turned to Raleigh, where Mr. Ritchie is a student at"State Col lege, after spending the summer at Pores Knob with Mr. Ritchie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Ritchie. Miss Violet Minton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Minton, of Wilkesboro, Miss Betty Ruth Morrison, daughter of Mrs. Lu ther Morrison, of Wilkesboro, and Miss Jean Lackey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. Canter, son of Hubert Canter, N. R. O. T. stu dent, returned Saturday from a cruise on the Pacific. Mr. Canter reported a very interesting trip to Panama, Cuba and back to Sna Francisco. Sunday afternoon Mr. Canter returned to Char lottesville, Va., where he is a student at the University of Vir ginia. Johnston County Votes Bone Dry Smithfield.?Johnston yester day became the 34th of North Carolina's 100 counties to go bone dry when voters decided by a majority approaching 2-1 to discontinue legal sale of beer and wine. Sale, of liquor' had not been legal in the county. The complete, unofficial vote total in the special referendum was reported as: Against beer 3,734, for 2,161. Against wine 3,817, for 2,048. Beer and wine elections are scheduled in six other counties: Ashe, Clay, Lee, Moore, Sampson and Wayne. o Iowa's Last Veteran Of Civil War Dies Sutherland, Iowa.?James P. Martin, 101, Civil War veteran who was on guard duty at the Ford Theatre the night President Lincoln was assassinated, died here yesterday afternoon. Patrick of Kings Mountain was elected moderator of the Presbyterian Synod here today on the first vote. Rev. A. L. Thompson, Char lotte, was re-elected assistant clerk. The synod was welcomed by Joseph B. Johnston, superinten dent of Barium Springs Orphans Home. It was announced that Rev. Lucien Rimbault of France would address the synod tomorrow. Rev. Oren Moore, Concord, in troduced Mrs. W. A. Dixon of Belmont, president of the synod's women organisation, who said there are 483 groups in the synod which raised $422,926 for church work, an increase of 811. 278. The women of the church will meet in Wilmington October 18-20. Dr. E. EJ. Gillespie said about 839,000 has been raised for Wil liam Black Home, Montreat, and work may start in the Fall. Rev. O. V.
