KEY CLUBS , "starts on PAGE 1 active vocational guidance pro tram for the whole student body, rhe idea spread together sections and state organizations were set up. In 1943 an international or ganization was set up for Canada and the United States, with an international convention each rear to which delegates are sent; also a district convention is held annually. Next spring the con rentlon of the Carolinas district will be held in Winston-Salem, and it is hoped that the whole membership of the looal Key [ilubs will attend. Contrary to the thought of some, the Key Club is not or ganized to build future Kiwan ans. The real reason for the Key [!lub is service, the unselfish lervice to faculty, to fellow stu lents and to the school; service activities of the club are carried >n through different committees, ;o build better communities. The projects are suggested, con sidered and accomplished?pro lects to maintain and improve he school property, to raise 'unds for various needs, to help ;he school community. The late Roe Fulkerson sum narized the idea of the Key Club n an editorial of the Kiwanis Magazine in 1946, here quoted: "Do you know of a group that gives separate appreciation ban luets to their mothers and fath ers each year, provides tests and lolds vocational guidance clinics !very year so that others may lind their proper place in the :ommunity, and makes a habit >f cooperating with those in au hority in all matters that need o be done, when there is no one slse to do them? No? Then you lave never heard of a Ke^ Club. "When you were in school, did pou make yourself a committee >f one to welcome new students? When someone threw waste pap er on the school grounds or in the school buildings, did you tactfully call it to his attention Dr else pick it up yourself? When a teacher called for a leader to take charge of a group of stu dents, were you trained to assist him? No? Then you didn't be long to the Key Club. "Do the students of your high school have frequent contact with the business and profession al leaders of your community? fc.re they getting practice in do ing the kind of tasks they will be called oj to do as adults? Are they organized and trained to :hink and be of use to the com munity? No? Then your school ioesn't have a Key Club. "Did you ever attend a meet ng and hear the presiding offi :er call for volunteers to sell tickets, scrub names off toilet vails, or do some other distaste-1 ul task that had to be done, and nvariably get more volunteers han were needed? No? Then you lave never attended a Key Club neeting. "Every one of these things, ind many like them, happen vherever there is a Key Club. They can happen in your school, tnd there is no other high school ;roup that performs the func ions of a Key Club. Every com petent principal welcomes this inselfish character-building co >peration to supplement and sup port his school program. Every tuperior high school boy thrills it belonging to a high school tervice club that gives him "that :ertain something" which cannot >e found in his text books. This s your challenge and opportun ty to build character and citizen-' thip in tomorrow's leaders." The Klwanis sponsor for the tVilkesboro High School Key 31ub is Roby R.
