'Calculations On
^National Service ,
rr Life Insurance
^e Veterans Administration
has made public its first calcu-'
latlons on the amounts to be
paid to nearly 16,000*600 veter
ans in the two-billion-elght-hun
dred-mlllion-dollar special Na
tional Service Life Insurance
dividend.
The maximum possible amount i
Shat any veteran can receive will'
kg $528. Other payments, based
age groups, will run to lessor
sums. The dividend will be paid
on both term and converted in
surance policies, and will be paid
only for the period that the pol
icy' was in force prior to the pol
icy anniversary in 1948.vNo pay-'
ments will be made for periods
of lapse, VA emphasized. j
The estimated rate of the divi
dend, VA says, was arrived at
alter long actuarial studies and
the rate of payment will be the
same for both term and convert
ed policies, as the dividend is
based o n mortality savings.
There have been no excess inter
est earnings.
In computing the maximum
ment of $528 the dividend
based on a $10,000 policy in
force for 96 months'(the longest!
possible period), on a veteran j
aged 40 or less at the time the'
policy was taken out. This repre
sents a payment of 65 cents a
month per 61,000 of insurance.
As the mortality rate for the age
group of 40 and under did not
vary greatly, a single dividend
rate will apply to this whole
group.
The rates of payment will be:
those under 40 years of age at
the rate of 55 cents per month
per $1,000 of insurance; those
41 to 45 years of age, scaling
down from 52 cents to 40 cents;
those 46 to 50, 37 cents down to
25 cents; those 51 to 54, 24
cents down to 21 cents; those
55 and over, 20 cents per thous
and. . -
Applications must be made to
| receive the dividends, which will
be paid in 1950.

Judge Sharp Is Locked
Up la Her Own Court
High Point, Oct. 3?They
locked up the judge in her own
court, but it won't happen again
?maybe.
Here for the second time in
three weeks to preside at a spe
cial term of Guilford Superior
Court, Judge Susie Sharp re
quested sheriff's, deputies to pro
vide her a key to the court build
ing.
Working a little overtime after
court recessed on Friday, she
found herself locked up in the
county building where court is
held. She sent an SOS to police
headquarters via telephone. Po
lice called the sheriff. The judge
was set free.
A poor way to treat a judge
in her own court, officers agreed.
They're being extra careful this
time.
