RAMBLERS TAKE CONFERENCE 1 LEAD BY DRUBBING ELKIN 28-7 Wilkes boro's hard - charging Ramblers took undisputed posi tion of first place in the High land conference here Friday night by a decisive 28 to 7 win over Elkin's Buckin' Elks. In handing the Elks ? their first defeat of the season, the Wilkesboro team outclassed the visitors in every department of play. Ray Triplett, Harold Dan cy, Dan Ldnney and Bill Byrd were outstanding o n offense while the line played a strong defensive game?the best of the current season. Elkin received, and three downs resulted in only fivp yards gain. After a punt Wilkesboro drove to Elkin's 30, where the ball went over on a fumble. Nei ther team was able to present a serious threat in the first quart er. In the second period, Ray Triplett brought the crowd of near 2,000 to their feet with a 68-yard run down the sideline to score. It was one of the most thrilling runs of his brilliant high school career. The second touchdown was set up by Dan Linney's dazzling 50-yard jaunt to the 20. He picked up ten morel and Triplett went through the Elkin team to Bcore standing up. Score at half was 14 to 0. Triplett's quick quick for 55 yards, which stopped on Elkin's one-yard line, was the play that set up the third Rambler touch down. Eldridge went deep in his J end zone to punt out, but the ball slid off the side of his foot, bounded inside the ten and settl ed on the one again. From that point Bill Byrd scored on a quar terback sneak. The final Wilkes boro touchdown was in the fourth period. An Elkin fumble was re i covered on the six. Two penalties and a loss of "two yards set the j ball back to the 18. Dean Ed wards then grabbed Byrd's pass in the end zone. Triplett kicked all four extra points for Wilkesboro, which added greatly to his already brilliant kicking record this year. Elkin made oaly one scoring threat in Ihe entire game, mak ing it good in the final minutes of the game. It was a passing NOTICE!! Jim More, ? the leading ground gainer in North (Wilkesboro's backfield, fought his way for 30 yards through the Statesville team for the Mountain Lions' touchdown which climaxed an 86 yard drive in the fourth quarter. Powers, a recent addition to the North Wilkesboro team, plunged I with power to spare though the( Statesville line to score the extra point. Powers is inexperienced in regular gridiron play but last year was a standout performer in six man football in the state. D. M. Stoker's punting for North Wilkesboro was a highlight of the I game. During the first half he kept Statesville backed up far in their own territory with his boom ing kipks. Statesville finally exploded in attack with Nance tossing ac curately in a 65-yard drive. At the 25-yard line Transou faded back, passed wide to Nance and Nance -shot a pass into the arms of Creed in the end zone. Eld ridge's kick was good and the score was 28 to 7. Play of Wilkesboro's forward wall stunned the Elks, who nev er had time to get their powerful backs under way. Alvin Eldridge, fullback, was the principal ground gainer for the visitors, and he did it the hard way with sheer power into the line for short gains. Not being able to get the scoring punch through the line or around the ends, the des perate Buckln' Elks used their [ aerial attack repeatedly in the | last half. Lineups and summary: Pos. Cove Winner In Battle Of Creeks It was the battle of the creeks here Thursday night in Memorial Park and Cove Creek made the biggest splash, winning from Millers Creek 38 to 0. For the first quarter it ? was a real contest, with Millers Creek holding the faster Watauga elev en scoreless and putting on some offensive drive of their own. It was not until the second period that the visitors broke loose and scored two touchdowns Keeping up the pace, Cove Creek scored twice in the third and twice in the fourth. For Cove Creek the outstand ing player was easily Horton, son of Sam Horton, principal of the school. The tall left half-l back scored four touchdowns. He j intercepted a pass to run 50 yards to score and later took off, on a reverse to score after a 5 5 -1 yard jaunt. The Millers Creek lads played j valiantly but were no match for ' the visitors. Showing lack of' football experience, the Millers I Creek boys on defense frequent- J ly missed tackles which would' have thrown the opposition for substantial losses. Lineups and summaries: Pos.
