Haden, of Richmond, Va? and Mrs. T. A. Campbell, of Wilmington, Va. Mrs. Wills and Mrs. Haden are sisters of Mrs. #ray. Mrs. Ethel Kilby, of Blue field, W. Va., Is visiting her cousin, Miss Lucy Shook. Mrs. Cecil Wiles is ill and has been confined to her home since Friday, friends regret to learn. Dr. Dorothy Brame, of Orlan do, Fla., is spending a few days In the city with her father, Mr. P. J. Brame. Born a daughter, Martha Jane, to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Phillips at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, Monday, Oct. 17th. Friends are glad to learn that Mrs. R. L. Scroggs, of Moravian Falls, is improving. Mrs. Scroggs has been ill for several days. Mr. Haggie Faw was among those in Asheville attending the Shriners convention Friday night, Saturday and Saturday night. Mr. Nat Sosnik was in Ashe ville during the week-end, where he attended the Shriners conven tion. Mrs. Fred Hethcock is spend ing some time at Moseley, Va., with her mother, Mrs. G. R. Rice, who is very ill. Mesdames J. E. Spainhour, J. W. White and C. E. Jenkins, of the Wilkesboros, spent several hours in Winston-Salem on Wed nesday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Chal McNiel had as their guests for the day last Tuesday Mrs. L. H. Koone and Mrs. Hendricks, of Trinity, and Mrs. Siler, of Mocksville. Mr. Victor Watts was home the past week-end visiting his moth er, Mrs. Finley Watts, at Purlear. Victor is a ministerial student at Wake Forest College. Mr. Gene McNeill, a student at the University of North Car olina at Chapel Hill, spent the week-end here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. McNeill. Friends regret to know that Mr. W. O. Absher has been ill for the past several days. Some im provement is reported in his con dition. Rev. Dean Minton, ministerial student at Wake Forest College, was home for the week-end visit ing his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Minton. Mrs. Roby T. Owens came back home Sunday, October 16th, aft er spending -a month with her husband in Philadelphia, Penn., who is in the Navy. He left Sat urday, October 15th for a twc ^months cruise. Mr. and Mm. Bill Jackson, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, spent the week-end with Mrs. ^ac^~ son's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Ward, of North Wilkesboro, Route 2. Miss Juanita Ward, of Mars Hill College, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Ward, of North Wilkesboro, Route 2. ^ number of guests visited in the home on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. R. Staley and grandsons, Bobby Mathis, Tom mie Jarvis and R- T. Staley, all of Roaring River route two, spent Thursday at the State Fair in Raleigh. Mr. Jay Anderson, of Ander son, S. C-, was home the past week-end with his mother, Mrs. Annie Anderson, of this city. Mr. Anderson has a position with the Hammond Organ company. Misses Nancy Felts and Ethy leen Funk spent the week-end at Mars Hill College and on Friday evening attended a session of the Religious Focus Week held dur ing the week at the College. Mr. and Mrs. Chal McNlel and Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Eller spent last Sunday in Spartanburg, S C. as guests of Mr. and Mrs. L, A. Ward. Mrs. McNiel is a niece of Mr. Ward. Mesdames A. F. Kilby, W. J Bason, C. T. Doughton, Misses Ruby Blackburn and Lois Scroggs went to Davidson College Friday evening to hear Miss Margaret Truman sing. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Lavann and twb children, Mr. and Mrs William Cranor and two children, of Winston-Salem, were guests of Mr. Cranor's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Cranor, Sunday. Mr. Gordon Finley, Jr., and his roommate at Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, Mr. Bill Smith, of Charlotte, spent last week-end here with Mr. Finley s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Finley. Sgt. Oliver C. Bumgarner, Jr., of the U. S. M. C., Cherry Point, has returned to the base after spending a ten-day leave with his [ Social Calendar The T. E. L. Class of the First Baptist church will meet Tuesday evening, 7:80 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. E. M. Anderson, with Mrs. J. W. Mc Kloskey as co-hostess. The combined meeting of the Spiritual Life Group and the Woman's Bible class of the First Methodist church will meet Tuesday afternoon, 8:80 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. C. Ij. Sockwell with Mrs. Scott Kenerly as associate hostess. The Wesley Bible- class of the First Methodist church meets Tuesday evening, 7:80 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. O. K. Pope with Mrs. Thur mond Kenerly as co-hostess. The Musical Arts club will meet Thursday evening, Oc tober 27, at eight o'clock at the home of Miss Martha LoU Frazier with Miss Frazier, Mrs. Lawrence Hunt, Mrs. Pau line Doughton, and Miss Mary Lindsay Stafford as hostesses. Banner, 01, Wllkesboro, spent the week-end, in Raleigh with their son, B. B. Banner, Jr., who is a freshman at State College. They were ac companied home by Miss Mar garet Hubbard, of Richmond, Va., who Is visiting her mother, Mrs James C. Hubbard. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Moore, of this city, had as their guests yes terday Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Moore, Mr. and Mrs. Cody Moore, of Morganton; Mr. and Mrs. - A1 Muddrock and their daughter, of Cottonwood, Kansas; Miss Frank ie Gaines and Mr. Tom Moore, of Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Barber, Mrs. Lee Hemphill and Mrs. D. ! J. Carter visited relatives and friends in Virginia over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Barber visited their son, Joe, at the Episcopal school at Lynchburg;' Mrs. Hemphill visited Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey, in Danville; and Mrs. Carter visited with her daughter, Miss Jane Carter at Sweet Briar College at Sweet Briar. James Monroe Gambill, en gineman, first class, USN, of Wil kesboro, and F. C. Anderson; USN, of Gilreath, as crew mem bers aboard the auxiliary mine sweeper U8S Tumult, are now taking part in joint Navy and Marine Corps cold weather exer cises off the coast of Labrador in the vicinity of Hamilton Inlet.
