THE JOURNAL-PATRIOT 3PORTS Dwight Nichols, Sports Editor LIONS-MOORESVILLE FRIDAY; RAMBLERS-SPENCER SATURDAY This is football week in North Wilkesboro, with a total of four ? splendid games offered Wilkes | football fans. Wilkesboro and Children's Home opened the big gridiron week here Monday night. Here tonight Ap palachian and Catawba teams clash at eight p. m. On Friday night North Wilkes boro's Mountain Lions will take on a strong Mooresville eleven in a South Piedmont conference contest, with kickoff slated for eight o'clock in Memorial Park here. Mooresville this year has not been winning a high percentage of games, but has been a close loser against several strong foes in the conference, and was a tough foe for Statesville. Here Saturday night Wilkes boro Ramblers will take on Spen cer, of the South Piedmont con ference, and kickoff is sched uled for eight o'clock. Wilkesboro is now trailing Children's Home for the honor of being high scor ing team in the state and may try to pick up some points to im prove their rating in that respect. Children's Home has finished the season. The football season will close here with the Wilkesboro-North Wilkesboro football game on the night of November IS. Eller's Will Play Mitchell Nov. 12 Eller's Bluejackets basketball team will play their first home game of the season Saturday night in Millers Creek gymnas ium against the fast team from Mitchell College in Statesville. Eller's lost the game at Mitch ell Saturday night last week and the team is planning for revenge in the encounter at Millers Creek. The Bluejackets this year have a gruelling schedule, including the top semi-pro teams in che state and a number of out standing college quints. Everybody is invited to see the Bluejackets in their first home game of the season at Millers Creek Saturday night. 90 Gallons Liquor And Still Seized Sheriff Bill Moxley, and Depu ties Prim and Russell destroyed a still near Mountain Grove church, in a community known as Stokestown, in upper Yadkin county Thursday, and found at the place 90 gallons of white liquor which had been made but not moved away. All mash and beer had been made up into whiskey, the sheriff said, and everything left just as it was finished, including the product of the still. No one was it the place, and no arrests have Seen made. GROCE, GABRIEL, WILL LEAD BABY MOUNTAINEERS TONIGHT Boone, Nov. 7.? Appalach ian's Baby Mountaineers swing back into practice today in prep aration for their importar t meeting with the Catawba In dians in North Wilkesboro Thursday night. This meeting with Catawba marks the first meeting against the Papooses in ten years. Coach John Kirk, former cap tain and tackle, and recently named to the AJl-Time Appalach ian team (Lexington) is cau tioning his team to be on the lookout for an aerial assault from the bows of the Brave's backs. Catawba has employed an overhead game successfully in previous games this season, and it is expected that a barage of passes will greet the Mountain eers in their first appearance in North Wilkesboro. Freshman halfback sensation Jack Groce, former Wilkesboro High School star, will head up a classy group of steppers for the Catawba game. Although classified as a member of the "B'' team, Groce has served the varsity well this year, and is currently pacing the Appalach ian backs in the run for honors Groce has blasted through for 5 touchdowns since serving part time duty with the varsity dur ing the past five games. He took a handoff straight through tackle for 67 yards and a touchdown on the second play of the game against East Carolina last Sat urday night. His broken field running has been sensational, Groce is being looked upon as one of the finest backfield pros pects ever to play at Appalach ian. Steve Gabriel (Lincolnton), will be up and under the "T". Gabriel is a very capable quar terback who has the asset of be ing able to get plenty of plays off and gone in a minimum of time. His running and passing is good, but his field generalship is his outstanding feature. Guard Jack Pennell (Lenoir) will bear the brunt of the lino play, along with end Gabe Aus tell (Blacksburg, S. C.). A shoot-the-works type of ball game is to be employed by the Mountaineers according to Coach Kirk. "We've got a good ball club but we'll have to be on our toes to win this one," he said. "Catawba has a whole backfield full of boys who are well coached and they'll bear watching," he added. Appalachian "B" team holds a,13-0 decision over Lees McRae. a 14-7 win over Brevard, a 27-6 victory over East Tennessee State College. Their lone defeat this year came at the hands of i the Lenoir-Rhyne "B" team in | Lenoir two weeks ago. At that time they went under by a 13-12 margin. They avenged this lone defeat last Friday night in Spruce Pine by sinking the same Lenoir-Rhyne team by a 19-6 count. (There are no words capable of describing the work of Jack Groce. He is just plain sensa tional. I do not doubt that he -will be THE outstanding back of all time here at Appalachian He can pass with the best . . and has everyone beat as a run ner ... He does not suffer from the usual lack of experience that freshmen are apt to find an obstacle. More and most import ant of all . . . the Appalachian team likes this boy . . . they will block for him . . . swear by him! Groce is sure to be Litile All American before he com pletes his Appalachian chores.? Notes by Bill Garvey).
